When Will Spitzer Finally Pull Out?

Posted by Harkavy at 5:45 PM, March 10, 2008

Will Eliot Spitzer resign in time for this evening's network newscasts? I wouldn't if I were him. I'd wait until right afterwards, so that my smiling face wouldn't appear simultaneously on every TV set in the Western world.

This is not New York provincialism. Spitzer is practically the most prominent and powerful Democrat in a huge state — Hillary Clinton's state, Wall Street's state, the state of millions of Democrats.

Spitzer's boner really sticks out, even in this day and age. He didn't just get some on the side. He violated the law, if the federal complaint and published reports are true.

Yes, it will be more important to the country when Citigroup finally collapses. That will be a real disaster.

Still, there's some meat to this Spitzer thing. In any case, the way it went down was a case of exquisite timing, coming on the heels of last night's final episode of HBO's The Wire.

My buddy and former colleague Adamma Ince just texted me:

Looks like Lester got Spitzer on the wire too.

She's referring to Lester Freamon, the ace detective on that ace investigative entertainment series about political corruption. Lester, adept at tapping and taping politicians, lawyers, and drug dealers, was the shining cop of all "murder police" on that instantly legendary series.

Judging from the complaint that apparently involves Spitzer, there was some pretty good bugging going on against him too.

Lost in the babble over the Spitzer story are the dubious prostitution laws. Why exactly is prostitution criminalized? However, it is, and Spitzer just got finished with a long stint as attorney general, where he hounded others for breaking laws. And now he's governor.

Is he just another Democrat who can't keep his dick in his pants? Well, this situation is a lot worse than any sexual escapade of Bill Clinton's. Spitzer hooked up with a hooker operation, if the federal complaint against him is accurate. And so he violated the Mann Act and other laws. How stupid is that?

Clinton, on the other hand, violated little more than Monica Lewinsky — and she would have paid him to have sex with her.

At least New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey had an excuse for playing around: He was a closeted gay. Yes, he did give his boyfriend a government job, but at least he didn't break any federal laws, at least that we know of.

McGreevey finally came out and said, "I'm a gay American."

Spitzer can only say, "I'm a laid American."

Big deal. But why in the world would Spitzer use an escort service? They all keep records, and there's plenty of free stuff out there for pols. JFK didn't write a check to Marilyn Monroe, did he?

Spitzer must have really needed a pro to get his kink on — not that there's anything wrong with that.

And if the federal complaint is true.

In the end, Spitzer appears to be — based on what we know now, which could change any second — not only stupid but also hypocritical.

All over New York, sad-sack whores and chickenheads are being busted, and he doesn't give a damn what happens to them. Not content with our state's offerings, the governor of New York goes to D.C. to feast on some high-priced spread. At least that's what the federal complaint says, if Spitzer is indeed who the feds are calling "Client-9."

Spitzer's resignation won't erase that blow to our tourism industry.

Let's hope the next governor doesn't go out of state to get his ashes hauled. If you can't keep it in your pants, at least keep it in New York.

Mayor Newsom, Mayor Villaraigosa, Governor Elliott Spitzer, and Bill Clinton all have something in common - they support Hillary Clinton and their party finds absolutely nothing wrong with their behaviour. What amazes me is how many women over fifty years of age stand in line to vote for a woman who cannot condemn the conduct of men who are cheating on their wives with prostitutes, city employees, or White House staff. I thought feminism was all about empowerment and not about accepting the kind of conduct these men displayed while holding public office. I guess as long as the economy is doing well, we are not at war and the trains are running on time married men in power can conduct affairs with women other than their wives with total impunity. What ever happened to disgrace and shame? What ever happened to fidelity to ones spouse? What ever happened to morality? Are we so short sighted that as long as things are going well in our Cities, States or our country that we accept any kind of behaviour? What is so very difficult about exercising some restraint and keeping your pants on when you are elected to the highest office of your city, state, or country?

Nicely done. Well-written. I say chaps, would you happen to have some more of that grey poupon? This is the type of stuff that makes a person splurge on a great steak or a fancy New York sub and some fine Italian sparkling water.
Email me when you get some more stuff.

Good Wire connection but Lester wasn't "murder police."

Letterman sez: Spitzer, this is exactly why I always wear a fake moustache and always pay in cash.

Harkavy replies:

Thanks for writing. But I used the term "murder police" generically about Lester. Technically, he was in the "Major Crimes" detail, but anybody who's the first to pry nails off the boarded-up entrances of abandoned row houses where murder victims are discovered is murder police, whether or not he's in the rotation to catch cases.

In any case, it's clear that Spitzer, unlike Obama, wasn't a fan of The Wire. If he had been, he would have known that he was very likely being bugged every second of every day.

I am here to let the world know that Spitzer is nothing more then the dirt that we walk on everyday! How dare he have the audacity to put HIS hand out and want the Native American People to pay for land that is rightfully ours, but behind closed doors he is running a prostitution ring. He got up everyday looking himself in the mirror and thought he was really somebody!! To his family I feel ashamed for you. I cannot believe that he wanted monies given to New York State for whatever the reasons were, but now let's ALL sit back and think, he more then likely wanted these monies to help run his little "business". I will say that when God said Brains, Spitzer thought he said Trains and he ran the other way!! He has no backbone of any kind. Who knows what kind of STD's that he may have, all because he couldn't keep his so called other head in his pants!!! BOO HOO Spitzer cry us all a river and name it after yourself when you are done. Frankly I don't think anyone will care if you fell in!! Good riddance to a person that really is A NOBODY!!! HOLLA IF YOU GOT NERVE!!

A snip from today's Rude Awakening:

Eric Fry, reporting from Laguna Beach, California...

When New York Governor, Elliot Spitzer, admitted to paying a "high-class" prostitute for sex, most folks gasped in disbelief. But when thousands of American companies admitted to paying a high-class ratings agency like Moody's for a credit rating, most folks yawned.

Neither prostitution nor bond-rating is victimless activity, but only one of them is a crime...for now.
