The Oscar Nominations Are Out!
Here it is, folks--the list of lucky and talented people who will compete for the final glory on the Gay Olympics on February 22. My predictions were 80% correct (four out of five in each category), which is not embarassing, but hardly worthy of a trophy either. I underestimated the Academy a bit, assuming they'd go for Dark Knight just because it was major (they didn't), and that they'd dis lesser-known actors like Melissa Leo, Taraji P. Henson, and Michael Shannon because they don't necessarily help ratings. (They nobly refused to.)
But who got the royal shaft? Sally Hawkins, that's who! After winning L.A., Boston, and NY Film Critics Awards plus a Golden Globe, Hawkins' scintillating performance in Happy-Go-Lucky was obviously considered too bouncy and cheery to have much gravitas, when you could instead single out Leo for transporting illegal immigrants or Angelina for sobbing over her lost child. (Oh, yeah, Brangelina both got nominated! They fucking have it all!)
Interestingly, Kate Winslet didn't get the two nominations she was pushing for (after having won two freakin' Golden Globes). The nominators rightly dissed the tepid Revolutionary Road and decided that her performance im The Reader was a lead, duh!
Another interesting fact: Slumdog Millionaire will be that rare film to win Best Picture without having any acting nominees at all! Weird!
