• P.S. I've been pegged as a bigot for saying that the realities of being gay can be harsh. Fine. But I have a story to tell and maybe Jonston, the perfect human being can give me some insight on this experience. There is a figure in my life, P, not a friend, but a figure. I've never been to her home. She was a professor in school. I didn't know she was gay. It never came up. But years after school, she and her partner filed a legal action - mostly perfunctory and symbolic - in our state supreme court over gay marriage. We all received notices from our chapter of the ACLU to send letters and e-mails in support of the petition That's when I found out she was gay. She lost, of course, but after the petition was refused she and her long time partner had a marriage ceremony. I didn't see her again for a few years until I went to my Chinese Medical practitioner and she was interning to be an acupunturist. I was happy to see her and asked her how her wife was. The next day, my Chinese Practitioner called me - she is native born Chinese woman - and asked me what I meant when I asked about P's wife. She didn't know. And she didn't approve. She didn't understand either and I had to explain that P was gay. Don't get the wrong idea about Dr. - , she's just a little backward in that regard. They still put people in prison for homosexuality in China. I felt bad about the exchange. I knew Dr - didn't approve and was worried I'd outed P to Dr. - . Maybe P knew Dr. - wouldn't approve and P was afraid it would jeopardize her relationship with Dr. -. When I went back to Dr. - several months later (my son was recently diagnosed with Chron's) and P- wasnt' there. I panicked. I finally asked Dr.- where P was and it turned out to be nothing. She was back next time. I never told P about the conversation with Dr. - because I was afraid it would hurt her. Now was I a fucking bigot because I worried that I'd maybe hurt P's career?

• Poor Bayard Rustin. If only he were alive today to see what he helped accomplish. He's a personal hero of mine. Out and proud, Bayard was elegant and eloquent. He was also responsible for the whole nonviolence movement (before Bayard, M.L. King, Jr. kept guns in his house - and who could blame him). A gracious, gorgeous man who willingly stepped aside so as not to torpedo the movement. There's an MLK Blvd. in every city. Bayard Rustin finally got a High School named after him in his small hometown. (They just left out all the gay stuff in the dedication.) When Coretta Scott King came out to vocally support gay marriage, she was doing it for Bayard.

• I'd like to say that gay people are accepted in the black community and in other communities of color as well -- as long as they keep their mouths shut regarding their lives beyond usual boring day to day banal issues. They still work in the community (hello Bayard Rustin), direct many church choirs, cook, decorate, do hair, sings solos on Sunday morning. And they make the rest of the world quite happy in the process as long as they don't ask for anything much out of the "ordinary" -- like recognition of their total selves. (The situation is similar to guys who like to lay back for BJs but won't even blow you a kiss.) Straight friends, may quietly take you aside to let you know that they "know" but the unspoken rule remains that open discussions of your sex life or your romantic aspirations are taboo. Staying in one's place is not only an issue for gays and lesbians but still is for women in general, people of color and the poor. And guess what -- nobody still wants to hear about it either. I have never been overly enthused about Mr. Perry's artistic efforts but, hell, he's making money. What more can you say? Is Rue Paul's "Drag Race" raking in as much as MaDea's movies or even attracting as much attention? What I would ask is if Milton Berle was gay, was Flip Wilson gay or any others of those past comedians who frequently used drag as part of their routines. As john Lennon said -- "Let it be."

When Eddie Murphy came out at the height of the AIDS crisis and said he didn't want his girlfriends kissing them after seeing their gay friends because she "might have AIDS on her lips," I put a mental check mark after his name too. Will Smith was recently outed (he ignored it) and the world now knows Eddie Murphy likes trannies. So how come the audience doesn't seem to mind? Murphy had an oscar-nominated role in Dreamgirls and Will Smith is still the highest paid star in Hollywood. Knowing gossip about others was how trust, love and admiration was gained in early society. Don't shoot the messenger.

Do I think it's fair to decide for another person if it's time to come out? Fuck no. How can you expect others to accept it when maybe you haven't yet yourself? • Actually, being gay does not mean a person goes through life being rejected, or ages alone. Being married and straight does not prevent a person from being lonely. It's no doubt easier to meet someone if you're straight - simply from the percentage standpoint - but if you're looking to someone else to "make" you feel happy or not alone, you're in trouble ultimately. Everyone has fears and issues, and the biggest joke is that we're "all so different" from each other simply because of who we are attracted to. DeMille, another movie schlockmeister who made his mazuma with titty-shaking, beefcake-baring Biblical epics. (After DeMille's "Samson and Delilah," starring Victor Mature and Hedy Lamarr, Groucho Marx said, "I don't want to see a movie where the leading man's tits are bigger than the leading lady's.) Let a scandal or two break (hasn't he already had trouble with writers working for less than scale?), his box-office slip and his empire start to crumble and he just might come out on Sister Oprah's show along with a new book and movie about his hard times, childhood abuse, etc. Make no mistake -- this guy is a black P.T. Barnum who knows there's a sucker born every minute. And like Liberace, he's laughing all the way to the bank.
