YouTube Treasure: Ode To Bobbie Gentry

Country cultists will remember that Bobbie Gentry is the sultry Mississippi-born singer of story songs like "Ode To Billie Joe" and "Fancy," a woman of great curves and fabulous notes, even when emitting glorified nonsense syllables. Well, here she is on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour performing the immortal non-hit "Niki Hoeky," which is described as a "slinky cajun number" featuring a pastel-colored version of the bayou, populated with all types of shirtless chorus boys making their minxy moves around the diva. I never knew that the bayou in the '60s was so similar to Hell's Kitchen today!

As he told me about it, a drunken 650-pound girl flopped on the bar's floor and sent tremors through the entire eastern seaboard, but even drenched and traumatized, I still remembered to go home and look up "Niki Hoeky."
