• I was on a cruise around the Baltics, and it seemed I was being followed by either Metallica or Madonna to each city I went. Let me just say after going to Poland, yes a death camp actually does look appetizing. Consider the Tower of London (literally you are walking over a floor in which under that floor royalty and gentry are buried after being unfairly executed) is one of the hot spots in London tourism, why the hell not with Auschwitz? But back to Madge, she always wants to make it seem that the city she chooses to tour in has significant meaning. Buenos Aires she visits Eva's grave, for example. Personally I think it would be a breath of fresh air if certain musicians and performers actually try to discover parts of a city like a local restaurant or cafe rather than the typical commercial tourist attractions.

• Let her go and let them take pictures. I've never wanted to go, it's sacred ground while also being the most profane, I don't need to rubberneck and I don't want that dust on my shoes. • with those sinewy arms madge is flaunting, she'll more than fit right in..... as for the camp, i was there recently. they're doing their best to keep the place solemn. i saw no signs that things were getting "disney-like". i saw lots of kids there too & thought how great....they're the ones that need to be told.

• I actually just returned from touring southern Poland with the company I dance for. We made a pilgrimage to Auschwitz, and, yes, it's horrifyingly become the new Disneyland. A bunch of kids from what I assume was a Pennsylvania JCC (because of the yamulkes and jackets identifying them as such) were posing for pictures in front of the famous "Work Will Set You Free" gate while making goofy faces. One guy I saw was cutting up in front of the skull-and-cross-bones sign warning prisoners of the electrified fence while his friend snapped away. And I was practically blinded by the flashbulbs going off in the gas chamber. And if that wasn't enough unfunny irony, the food in the restaurant next door was actually some of the best I had during my entire week. Birkenau, on the other hand, was truly shattering. The quietest place I've ever been in my life, which rendered all of us speechless. However, there was a housing development in the field directly across from it, and as we were leaving, a guy was nonchalently washing his car in full view of the camp.
