Tom Cruise Inspired American Psycho!
So it turns out Christian Bale had a fabulous inspiration for his skin-crawlingly creepy character in the movie version of American Psycho--namely toothy married man Tom Cruise!
According to this interview with that film's director, Mary Harron, Bale saw Cruise on David Letterman's show and was taken by "this very intense friendliness, with nothing behind the eyes."
He meant Cruise, not Letterman!
