A Toast To Tovah Feldshuh

afterdark2.jpg
Broadway types lined up to honor four-time Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh at the Friars Club the other night, where a lot of the jokes were about her birth name (Terri Sue Feldshuh) and her current, more Hebrew one. "She was actually born Ann Quinn," claimed toastmaster Freddie Roman, "but her manager said 'No one can pronounce it.'"

By any name, the original Sweeney Todd, Len Cariou, was a riot, singing, "Attend the tale of Terri Sue. But call her that and she'll say 'Screw!'...The demon actress from Scarsdale."

And the demon herself dropped the earnestness she'd been praised for all night and did a fascinating number as Golda Meir as a Borscht Belt comic, wearing a Gypsy-like headdress that made us wonder if Golda's real birth name was Mama Rose.

An offbeat, entertaining mitzvah of a night!
