Jim Sheridan Reveals His Only Setback

Jim Sheridan is no slouch, having directed the powerful new film Brothers, in which Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal vie for honor and for Natalie Portman while dad Sam Shepard plays them like a deck of cards.

Sheridan also directed such potent flicks as My Left Foot, In The Name of the Father, and In America, the 2003 movie about an Irish family that travels to our shores and faces awful hardships only Glenn Beck would be gloating about.

That movie--as I discussed here recently--reduced me to a wellspring of embarrassing tears at a screening, and I can't believe I'm revealing that a whole other time!

But at a luncheon the other day, Sheridan told me the film totally bombed in the UK.

"First of all, there was the title," he explained.

"Second, it came out a year after America had gone into Iraq.

"And third, everyone thought, 'Why are they driving through America?' It's like they were saying, 'Why are they rejecting us?' "

God, I never knew the Brits were so freaking thin skinned. Maybe Sheridan should do a sequel called Back in the Bloody UK, OK, Bitches?.
