Fat People Will Have To Pay Double To Fly!

• Total weight of passenger and their luggage should be done and their ticket price adjusted accordingly. I weigh 170. My wife 100 my son 80. Our suitcase was one or two pounds over the max and we had to pay like $50 more! (actually we discarded a few items instead). The total weight calculation should work the other way too: reducing the price for thin people. Don't worry airlines, there are so few thin people left that your profits can only go up.

• The back is the backbone (pun intended) of the entire body. Make sure you choose the correct chiropractor for you if you ever will need one!

• Though I mentioned one time in this blog that I had it from a horse's mouth that Mikey has quite a piece, I didn't say - don't think - his python is 22 inches!

• I see the argument, and raise it again - what about people who are so ignorant and recline their seats so you cannot cross your legs, or read your book? Or for rude people who think the own the arm seat and elbows sticking out where they elbow you, or spread their legs and take my foot space? If you want to set rules - set rules for everyone. Or one of my worst night mares - children - screaming kicking throwing!! personally i think parents with children should sit at the back of the plane with their bundles of joy... it interfers with my peaceful enjoyment of being cramped like a sardine! Or Fat, Skinny, and Tall people can all buy first class tickets - it would solve a lot of problems - even the screaming children!

• Hi F. Packer! It's not that free of a country. You actually can get arrested for eating or drinking on the subway!! But I wonder why you eat on the subway. It is so filthy and you're being bumped and thrown about. It's enough to make you puke. I must also say, when I'm on the subway and somebody is noshing away on some stinky gross slimy tub of food, I try to get as far away from them as possible. I think they must be ravenous to try to combine that brutal type of travel with eating. It couldn't be good for digestion. This discussion seems to be about body size and shape and how it affects others, so not so much that, as you say, "...body size and shape are not a barometer of personality type and even if it were, it's no one's business except the person walking around in that body."

• True, some sick people get fat because they're ill but most fat people are not fat because they're sick. Most are great big greedy piggies who ate all the pies. Only fine the fatties if they overspill their seats, if you see a fatty heading for your row don't, under any circumstances, allow them to raise the armrest between your seats. Furthermore, if they're going to stuff us in like battery hens then stop the damn seats from reclining, reclining seats are a menace to anyone with knees and no leg-room, and don't get me started on the pigs they hire as cabin-crew these days...

• I eat on the subway all the time and I've never weighed more than 150 lbs. It's a free fucking country..people are free to eat as much as they want whenever they want...body size and shape are not a barometer of personality type and even if it were, it's no one's business except the person walking around in that body.

• I think the eating anywhere part is what makes it an addiction. Plus, if you eat high-fat foods, you tend to crave them all the more. One of the injustices of life, that the best-tasting foods are usually the worst for you. It is sad to see overweight kids.

• Hi UhOkay! Just wanted to comment on your comment. Not all fat people eat way too much, but clearly...when I see someone on the subway platform, for instance, munching and crunching and slobbering over some (usually way-high fat food) snack, they are almost always overweight. Same for lined up at the fast food or ice cream places. It seems like not using any sense about food leads to being fat. How hungry could you be to eat on a filthy subway platform? I agree that being ridiculed doesn't make it easier for them. I wonder what I would say to an over-eater child - not wanting to make them miserable, but some sense about food intake must prevail or they are pretty much doomed to being fat. And ridiculed.

• Mark: Well, in his case, I would say he shouldn't even have been allowed on the flight, because he is blocking the main aisle - but then he does have the right to be fat and to fly. Not sure what the solution would be, since even if he did buy two seats, it doesn't look like he could move farther inside the row. movielover: fat people don't necessarily eat more than others - at some point, their metabolisms slow down and they're not exercising, so even eating a reasonable portion can put on weight. Food is an addiction - not for every overweight person - but for many, it is an addiction, just like smoking or drinking - only the effects are visible to all. In many ways it's an uncomfortable way to live, and it's not made easier by being ridiculed.

• Seems reasonable that each flyer wants the seat they paid for, not to share it with the extra large neighbor they sit next to. I'm torn between thinking the really fat are mostly that way because all they can/want to do is stuff their faces with foodstuffs and thinking, "I'm sorry for your misery. It must be hard to wake up every day and be so fat." People really do "hate" fat people because it seems that they are fat because they eat way more than they should. On the other hand, almost everyone has a fat friend they love. I saw a really fat person at a theater lately who had to have a folding chair put in an out of the way space because they couldn't fit into the theater chair. I was sorry for his misery.

• As a he-man, my tall frame cannot comfortably fit in any airliner seat comfortably - especially when the thoughtless dolt in front decides to recline into my lap. The airline should pay ME for my business. As someone whose weight has fluctuated in the past, I can sympathize with the overweight - I also cannot remember ever seeing anyone so fat that they couldn't squeeze themselves into one seat.

• I remember being in Second Grade and the teacher asked us kids what it was we "hated." (Odd question.) I recall one little boy saying he hated "fat people." I thought: what could a fat person possibly have done to this kid to make him feel that way. On the other hand, I think the airline's policy is correct. If I were obese, I would probably buy two seats to avoid any kind of unpleasant confrontation.

• I agree that people need to lose weight, but those seats are awfully tiny, even for a normal size person. I consider myself fairly average---5'11", 170---but I always have major legroom issues. Forget the view out the window---always go for the aisle seat.

• It's about real estate. If I broke through the wall to my neighboring apt because of my massive size, my land lord would charge me for the square footage if he couldn't kick me out altogether. You gotta pay to play - makes that dollar menu at McD's not seem so inexpensive anymore...

• Sounds like they're punishing anyone who isn't a supermodel. I think the airline should assume the cost for any extra seats needed.

• You can't say this new policy is exploitation because if there are empty seats, they'll refund the fattie the money. I think it's a reasonable choice for everyone's safety.

• I've very tall and thin. I am tired of sharing a large portion of my chair with people who cannot fit into theirs. I also have to pay for my check baggage now. I think they should weigh me and the baggage and then decide if I should pay for baggage at all. I want everyone and everything to be weighed. Then if it is under 200lbs total, your bags are free or you get a row to yourself or something. Being thin is not fair either when it comes to plane fares. 6ft 124lbs

• i'm 6'2', w/legs from here to the floor. after spending seven hours trapped in a window seat on a packed plane behind a 600-lb woman and her 100-lb toddler, a grotesque thing she continually bounced on her huge lap as it incessantly howled, resulting in a constant pounding of my knees, which were in my chin, i've spent the past 2 years enriching my chiropractor & hobbling about on wounded knees. when i asked for assistance from the flight attendant before we left the ground, she said, "if you've got a complaint, go to delta.com." don't charge 'em double: suggest they walk.

• Here's an idea: why don't all airlines weigh you with your luggage and charge by the pound for everything over 200?

• I think obese people should just pay for one seat--as long as that seat isn't the one next to me!!

• I don't see how the airlines have any other choice. If someone fills more than one seat, they have to pay for more than one seat. Sad but true.
