Oscar's Biggest Outrages!

• Do you realy have a passion for star chit chat? Not want it? Should you take long lunches from jobs when you know your newest issue of People will hit the newstands? I waiting to grasp the number of people today actually find famous person gossip interesting, and exactly how many simply consider the attraction for it plain silly.

• Im probably alone but I think Ordinary People is a better film than Raging Bull, it has a much greater focus on plot and character development, while Redford may not match Scorsese for fancy camerawork, he leaves Marty in the dust when it comes to storytelling and making you care about characters (3 characters mind you) with extraordinary depth

• Great job, guys. Highly entertaining. Agree about Travolta deserving the Oscar that year. What a grand performance on so many levels.

• Is there anyone out there who is actually "buying" the Academy's new 10 Best-Picture nomination rule? Why don't they just admit they they can't handle all of last year's blistering critism from the media over "The Dark Night" failing to secure a BP nomination? Just becasue it didn't make the final 5 vote count doesn't mean it wasn't nominated (who knows, maybe it was # 6 in the nomination process, yet failed to make it by merely a vote or two, and since the Academy will never realease voting results only THEY will know for sure). So now we have 10 BP nominations to look forwrd to? What's the Academy going to do next year when the media starts slamming them for failing to nominate film # 11? Where's an Oscar streaker when you need him (or her)?

• The last time I watched the Oscars was the year Tommy Lee Jones won best supporting actor over Leonardo di Caprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Leo was wonderful in that role. Tommy is great, but leo was incredible. I changed the channel and never looked back. .I quit watching the Grammy Awards when I heard someone refer to Kenny Rogers as a great artist. I said, "that's it," changed the channel and that was the end of it for me. The only awards show worth watching is the Tony Awards, and Neil Patrick Harris was wonderful, he could doogie me any time.

• Can ANYONE explain how "The Sting" (while a Great film) won over "The Exorcist," how Billy Bob Thornton lost Best Actor for "Sling Blade" to Geoffrey Rush, AND how in the Holy Name of GOD Ellen Burstyn lost Best Actress for "Requiem For A Dream" to... Julia Roberts?!!! Seriously, JULIA ROBERTS. What's next? Tobey Maguire over Sean Penn?!

• Judy Holliday's girlfriends included Jane Bowles and Patricia Highsmith.

• The real question is: which Oscar winners have used their trophy as a dildo?

• How can anyone overlook the "best" picture winner of 1952. . . "The Greatest Show on Earth"? It wasn't even the greatest show in Newark, New Jersey.

• Ernest Borgnine over James Dean and Frank Sinatra. Frank finally got a meaty role as a good guy addicted to heroine and then you had Jimmy as Cal Trask.... sigh. I wanted to take Liz Taylor's shoes and throw it at Borgnine watching Marty. A depressing bore. Crash winning. I didn't like either that film or Brokeback deserved Best Picture but when I heard Crash announced my jaw dropped to the floor. Really, it looked like BM's night. The film was winning awards it had no business winning, like Best Original Score, that's when you know it is a movie's night.

• To Fudge: I think the "awful" portrait is of Joecelyn "Wildebeest." The cat ears give it away.

• To me 1979 explains 1980. It was a watershed year in American movies - an embarrassment of substantive entertainments, one minor classic after another: Alien, All That Jazz, Apocalypse Now, Being There, Best Boy (one of many docus which Michael Moore never bettered), Black Stallion, Breaking Away, China Syndrome, the best Dracula version, Electric Horseman, Escape from Alcatraz, Manhattan, Norma Rae, Richard Pryor's 1st concert film, The Rose, Seduction of Joe Tynan, The Warriors, Wise Blood. Even if you throw in less-appreciated products like Hair, Last Embrace, Starting Over, Time After Time, and Zulu Dawn, Kramer vs Kramer (which won the Oscar) will still seem like a totally safe choice, worth seeing once and that's that. So when the Academy insisted on something similar the next year, it signaled to everyone to just stop trying already, unless what they were making was a nice, safe, small-budget misogynist domestic drama.

• And best monkey.

• Sunset Boulevard all around. should have won: Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Actress Best Supporting Actor Best Floating Dead Narrator

• You may have not liked "Saving Private Ryan" but there were definitely better films than the 1998 Best Picture winner "Shakespeare in Love".

• darlings, I used to fret and gnash my teeth over the Oscars. After Braveheart won Best Picture, I stopped caring. The ground should have opened and swallowed the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion whole. I say, just go out and vote for your favorite movies with your ticket purchases. It's your own fabulous private film festival, playing now (most likely at Lincoln Plaza)!

• Biggest outrage was when Avatar won. Oh, wait that hasn't happened yet.

• Biggest outrage was in 1997 when Titanic won for Best Picture the same year Boogie Nights wasn't even nominated, that's an outrage! Boogie Nights is one of the best films of the last 20 years.

• I know this is off the subject, but Southern Dave mentioned Michael Cera, I 'm totally lost at why he's in so many films recently??? I just do not get his appeal . Seems that most of his movies are bombs.

• Burt Reynolds should have won for Boogie Nights, over Robin Williams.

• Chic glamour girl Grace Kelly won over Judy Garland because Edith Head put Kelly in a sweater and people thought that was acting. There is a curious resemblance I'm just beginning to notice between Musto and Michael Cera. Truly, a mystery for the ages.

• Bacall should have won for 'The Mirror Has Two Faces.' Streisand should have AT LEAST been nominated as Best Director for 'Yentl' and 'The Prince of Tides.'

• Agree with Jonster. There is no other way to look at 1950's Best Actress award. Now, the Grace Kelly/Judy Garland thing in 1954 was another story. That was payback for all of Judy's issues in the past and it still irks me. Might not be so bad if Kelly in some way deserved her award. Hollywood politics continue to make the whole thing a charade but what are the options? It's a huge American media event. When you take into account that the whole Oscar thing was dreamed up by Louis Meyer as a rigged publicity stunt for the studios, is there any reason for us to pretend it's anything else?

• My choices for least deserving: Braveheart, Slumdog Millionaire, Around the World in 80 Days, Gandhi, Out of Africa, Dances With Wolves, Chariots of Fire Cliff Robertson, John Wayne, Art Carney, Geoffrey Rush, Sidney Poitier Julie Andrews, Katharine Hepburn (Guess Who's Coming..., On Golden Pond), Jodie Foster (both), Kathy Bates,

• OMG Michael. You seem so uncomfortable on film. I agree with your outrages however, especially about Ordinary People. That movie was so depressing I wanted to slit MY wrists after seeing it..

• You're right. Gloria and Bette canceled each other out for the 1950 Oscars. But I LOVE Judy Holliday's performance. It never fails to make me laugh, no matter how many times I watch it. Her over-the-top performance is still all in the details. Short strokes, instead of brooooad strokes like Bette and Gloria.

• No mention of Marisa Tomei?

• Desperately trying to figure out what that's a portrait of on the wall. It's awful!! But I agree about Raging Bull. Should have won. And also that Richard Dreyfuss was the wrong choice. Travolta should have gotten it. He's never won!
