What's Your Favorite Drag Movie?

• The Year of Living Dangerously - not really a drag film perhaps, but you have to admit Linda Hunt was excellently portraying a man. Pretty good film too as I remember it. And Mel Gibson was still good looking.

• I don't count Divine's movies, because he was not "in drag" per se, but playing female characters. It's a fine distinction, I know. So for me, Rocky Horror, Priscilla and Hedwig take the big pink frosted "drag cake."

• Die! Mommie Die! with Charles Busch. A fab Joan Crawfordy performance. Darling Jason Priestly! Also liked Myra Breckenridge. Though not really drag, exactly, with Raquel Welch the fem and Rex Reed (also the fem!) male identity. Funny, campy, Raquel wearing a strap on and pumping a straight guy. John Huston as Uncle Buck. I liked it!

• The Year of Living Dangerously. Linda Hunt, best cross-racial/gender drag - won the Oscar.

• I Was a Male War Bride!!

• Hedwig and the Angry Inch.....should have been nominated for an Oscar at least. Damn that academy!

• What was the movie with the army deserter hiding out on a farm who ends up sleeping with all four of the farmer's daughters? One of the daughters was a lesbian but he seduced her by dressing in drag for a costume party. Was it Belle Epoque? In any case, gotta go with Rocky Horror.

• Pink Flamingos had a happy ending. Divine killed off her enemies and headed off to Boise! LOL Anything with Divine in it. Priscilla Paris is Burning La Cage aux Folles (the original) Some Like it Hot

• LIQUID SKY - Anne Carlisle plays an East Village gal, Margaret, who kills with her cunt (her quote, not mine) but also plays a man, Jimmy, and they snipe at each other through the movie. Should be on DVD and is a shame that it isn't. Totally captures the spirit, creativity, and excitement of early 80s downtown NYC.

• 1.Female Trouble (if that's the one with Dawn Davenport) and 2. Priscilla (because I love Guy Pearce)

• Can't believe how far Priscilla Queen of the Desert could get. I'm all for great, even extreme drag costumes and performances - Divine forever! - but to maintain all this while laughing at white trash, bull dykes, mail-order brides, and so on? Where the only redeemable non-gay characters are an old white male and a submissive ex-wife? The only way to intelligently adapt this movie for the stage (or a remake) is to add more drag numbers and throw out the hopelessly anachronistic plot on its shit-covered ass.... But then again, considering how consistently Broadway turns its source material into offensive middlebrow entertainment, why not save on production costs and just screen the movie as it is?

• Some Like It Hot had Marilyn Monroe for context! - and it has a happy ending. I've searched the net in vain for a still from Thunderbolt and Lightfoot with Jeff in drag. He was SO cute.

• Absolutely agree with Southern Dave. Nothing beats Some Like It Hot, even now. "But I'm a MAN!" "Nobody's perfect!"

• Tootsie may not be Some Like It Hot but it's pretty brilliant nonetheless. But I prefer movies in which the drag queens ARE drag queens, not straight men in some guise. That's why my faves are Rocky Horror and Priscilla.

• I'm sorry, but "Some Like It Hot" is the most perfect film comedy since the movies learned to talk. Everything is of a piece; the script, direction and performances are all pure genius. And STILL FUNNY no matter how many times you've seen it.

• Tales of Hoffman (Pamela Brown as a man.) Grief (Jackie Beat playing a woman -- not a drag queen. PLUS a pre-transitioned Alexis Arquette as a twink closet case.) Victor/Victoria (Robert Preston's big musical number.)

• I agree, Ketel. I also consider Sylvia Scarlet to be Katharine Hepburn's drag performance, in which she eerily resembles David Bowie - at least to these jaded eyes.
