Rent has finally become so depoliticized and mainstreamed that its tunes are being used to hawk merchandise on the telly.
In fact, "Seasons of Love"--the weepy ballad about measuring the life of someone who died from HIV--is being played in a new Macy's jewelry commercial!
I guess the ad is saying:
If your mother has AIDS, buy her a nice pair of earrings!
