Julie Andrews Plays Against Type in New Animated Film

Oscar-winning goodie-good Julie Andrews didn't want to play Steve Carrell's mother in the animated film Despicable Me.

Not at first, anyway.

See, Carrell voices the villainous Gru, and Jules was offered the vocal role of his overpowering shrew of a horrible mother. It's as far from Mary Poppins as you can get in this biosphere.

Julie was deeply disturbed by the prospect, but then she got into the idea because it was something different and challenging -- way more nag than nanny.

Jokes Carrell in the press materials: "Maybe there's an awful side to her, and it comes out in this movie."

Yeah, that spoonful of sugar thing always seemed a little diabolical to me, especially in a room full of diabetics.
