What's With Gay Sex in Bathrooms?

I'm just wondering about the aesthetic roots of it all.

Surely it's a residual effect of the shame and the forced hiding that hovered over previous eras' gay living.

A bathroom stall was probably a relatively safe place to carry on (unless you're George Michael).

And something about the illicit nature of the whole thing no doubt adds to the hotness.

You're doing something mommy and daddy wouldn't condone -- nor would the mayor, the cops, or the owner of the establishment -- and that makes it extra dirty and exciting.

But as Mark Brennan Rosenberg points out in his funny new memoir, Blackouts and Breakdowns:

"What is it with gay guys making out in public restrooms?

"For a group of people that pride themselves on cleanliness, they sure do find disgusting places to fornicate."

I know, right? Whatever happened to "Don't shit where you eat"?
