Cary Grant and Randolph Scott: A Love Story

This historical observation just came in from regular reader Gregory Moore:

"It's happened to me more than once: While conversing with a straight person, Cary Grant's name will come up and the topic of whether or not he was gay arises.

"It seems that straight people -- especially straight women -- will bristle and become very sexually territorial about him. Sort of like, 'No, you can't have him! He's ours!'

"I can't think of any other star whose nebulous sexuality gives rise to such a tug-of-war between the hets and the homos.

"For me, the answer lies in the following photos I've collected over the years of Grant with Randolph Scott. Grant's 'friendship' with the devastatingly handsome Scott was remarkably open and fairly candid in the dangerously oppressed 1930s.

"There were several photo shoots for the fan magazines of the two 'merry bachelors,' who for several years shared a beach house in Santa Monica, as well as a mansion in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, which was commonly referred to in the press as 'Bachelor Hall,' both before, during, and after their various marriages to women (they had seven marriages between them).

"These photos are just a few of the many I've found, and I find it so perfectly clear that they were much more than just 'roommates.' It's obvious that they shared a great love and were just about the most physically gorgeous couple in Hollywood history."

it would be obvious today, but not necessarily then--guys can "love" each other but still stick to rules that they believe in, such as sexual / religious ethics (not saying they should or shouldnt) of their time. They also might just "like girls" instead. These guys clearly love each other, as great friends, and what else matters, where the body parts go or dont, and so on?? The main part is the love, and that is to be respected, and celebrated, IMO. And as a straight man, I also can appreciate these very beautiful men. We are humans first. All love deserves our devotion and protection.

I don´t care if they were gay, they were gorgeous

There were several actors that made up the Randolph Scott character.  There was two with white hair that were the best One was my father, Theodore Melbourne Wigle, he has a w marked with ink on his photo among youtube, "What ever happened to Randolph Scott?" to id him from the others.  He was the best stunt man but shorter than the older Randolph Scott. My dad, claimed to have nine kids with 2 wives. Hugh Hephner never married. Clint Walker filled in on occassion but with long shots. But, there was another someone like Peter Graves. I just can't remember rite now...all family men except for Hugh who may have felt that he was the owner of the copyright as he was the investor. Was Hugh gay? I think he was sort of not interested in anyone. I remember though that as a child that had been arrested for loitering/playing outside around 6 years of age, Hugh came running claiming that I was his child but he knew that he wasn't the other Randolph Scott. He felt sorry for me. Strange, isn't it? And, he paid the fine.  I think that these rumours were done to keep people away from the real families or someone had a REAL grudge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two men more gorgeous than anyone ever had a right to be.  Having sex play with whomever they wanted, whenever they wanted.  Sounds pretty "advanced" to me.  I can understand how difficult it is to imagine for anyone that would prefer to slap them down with a label of "gay."  God I hate narrow minded sexual politics.  Both of them were great actors and charming as hell.  Better than we deserve, haha.

I seem to remember a photo of the two of them cooking breakfast together that looked very gay indeed. It was "the one" that convinced me.

Fact that people are questioning and still do not for sure know one way or the other tells its own story! I personally dont think so, i  lived with a mate for 4 years before getting a flat and then another mate needed help and stayed with me for a few years before he passed away we were best friends and helped each other we were not gay! Too many people guessing and presuming what they want to believe! If it were true then I doubt there would be so much debate?

Why is it that when people wore baggy pants back then no one tried to claimed they were trying to 'act black black '?That's all I hear now days. *rolls eyes*

Anyways, on to the issue at hand. I really can't say if they were gay or not (regardless of gossip, photos, hearsay, etc). Back then you have to remember guys didn't act as macho in the same way they do now. They hugged, kissed even, and nothing much was thought of it. Now a days, they would go into shock and die on the spot if another man hugged them or something.

But the odd things is, certain very sexual suggestions and actions between males of this generation are very common, but it's considered ribbing and joking. Don't ask me why... I'm a chick, but I mostly hang out with males, other chicks find me odd, for some reason.I don't care about yapping about makeup or some guys or a lot of gossip (some gossip is fun, I must admit...lol).

Anyway, these guys are straight, and would knock a block off if it was even hinted they had any 'gay feelings'. Sad, yeah. But that's how it is. Even odder, the ones calling themselves liberal are far more homophobic than the ones calling themselves conservative, but neither type will admit to any homophobia..lol.  They are always making comments about wrestlers they don't like being gay as if it's a bad things and a good put down. I got on them a few times about it, but to no avail. *sigh*

Cary Grant and Randolph Scott, two good looking guys, and from the looks of it, may have been a cute couple. :-)

The picture with grant reading what I assume is a script, while lying by Randolph's feet as the latter is absorbed in his book, is the sweetest and also most telling vignette. Can you picture any straight buddies doing such a thing, in a house that's big enough to accomodate separate reading rooms?

They're so adorable together. If they were boyfriends, it must've really caused conflict between them to marry women as cover ups. That's very stressful.

Also May West outed them back when she wrote her auto-biography, not to be mean but as peice of trivia.  They  were not Hollywood's first, you had Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power that had a gay afair for many years just revealed about 10-15 years ago.  Saadly Society has not changed and these romances had to be kept hidden.  God only know how many of our bygone Hollywood legends lives a sheltered and secretive life because of bigotry!

As for their rooming together. One does have to consider that it was the 1930's, and, America, along with the rest of the world, was in the Great Depression. Two bachelor roommates did cut down expenses; and, if anything, both were known to be real skinflints, when it came to a buck..

Also, while Cary Grant was "gorgeous," I could never imagine a romantic interlude with him.  He seems like a wonderful guy with whom to spend the afternoon shopping and talking about other love interests and about our kids and hopes and dreams for them.  But a lover?  I think it is because he gave off a gay vibe.  Now, Daniel Craig may be a rather unpleasant looking guy with his clothes on, but I couldn't imagine being in a room with him without wanting to rip those clothes off.  He gives off a straight as hell vibe.  I am a woman.  I know a guy who is off limits when I see him.

Jane the Pain

First of all, the comment about women being "territorial," that is true, but only with other women.  Most women would gladly cut a guy lose with her best wishes if she found out he was gay.  A woman will beat herself up forever over the loss of a man to another woman--she will always compare herself to the woman who won.  She can chalk up such a loss to a man as not being reflective of her shortcomings.

That being said, I do think Cary Grant is gorgeous, but I have always thought that he was gay.  It is just so obvious to me.  I think he married to stop the rumors.  The connection between these two men is clear in their body language.  I also always thought that Rock Hudson was gay, and I am sure that someday, George Clooney will be "outed."  He is so gay.  But, so what?  Good for them. I just wish they could be more open about it in this society, but for George to lose his aura of "availability" and "heterosexual manliness" would be career suicide.

I just watch "My Favorite Wife" in which Cary and Scott starred in 1940 with Irene Dunne.  With the aid of my tv set I was able to notice something I hadn't seen before.  Both men are wearing the exact same ring on the pinky finger, left hand.  Sweet.

Great pictures but to me they look very much like photo shoots and i don't see the jump from art photography to gay relationship. That being said, i think CG and Scot; mirrorred each others grandiose and perfectionist self; whenever their egos were bruised and they felt diminished in their grandiosity by women, they had each others narcissistic mirroring to restore their fragile ego. At the root of it is CG's distrust of, and anger against, women, rooted in his abandonment by a previously adoring, smothering mother. "How dare she leave me".

Gay, no. Bisexual, who knows? You can't call someone gay who doesn't engage in a gay lifestyle. They were both married and had children and lived in and out of marriages with women. So, it isn't fair to gay people who engage in an openly gay relationship to lump them in with men who don't. It's not about claiming them for women, gay or straight men. It's about how they lived their public and private lives and it wasn't as a gay person.

"One kiss doesn't make me a lesbian, does it."

In those heady days in what might be termed the HEYDAY of hollywood there were so many handsome men around and handsome was an understatement compared top some of the toads that pass for good looking these days, the list was endless Errol Flynn Tyrone Power, Robert Young Cary Grant, Randoplh Scott. With spare time on their hands no doubt once they,d deflowered every starlet in town they turned to each other to pass the time. There was no curious media with an insatiable appetite for scandal in those days which made liasons a breeze. Whether they were full blown gays or bi sexual which is more likely who knows and more to the point who cares, iy was their acting that made them icons.

What a nutty comment. Men have sex with each other because they are bored with the women available. You should write a chapter in a textbook on psychiatry.

I agree. No one knows for sure what Grant's sexuality was exactly. He obviously did like women. He had a big affair with Sophia Loren while making "Houseboat". That was a very open affair too.
