Is "Tranny" So Bad?

Gay activists seem to have a problem with the use of the word "tranny" to connote a transsexual person.

They feel it's demeaning and derogatory -- it's basically "the t word."
But I've never heard anyone else ever complain about it.
I use it, in fact, the way it's tossed around on the downtown scene, as a total term of endearment, and the kids don't bat a lash over it.
In fact, they say it, too!
Should I stop?
Am I big b word?
