Black Swan Director Trashes Critic!

black-swan-movie-poster-1020557703.jpg
At the New York Film Critics Circle Awards last night, critics' chairman Armond White brought up 'Black Swan' director Darren Aronofsky to present an honor to his cinematographer.

Immediately, Aronofsky seemed to be channeling his own black swan.

"Keep it up," he said to White, "because you give us all another reason not to read New York Press."

And suddenly we realized that White must not have liked Black Swan.

Also that Aronofsky can't be gentleman enough to rise above one bad review and instead use his stage moment to bask in the glory being given on this night of praise.

"Sorry," he said later. "It's my only chance to get back. Now it's done."

But White wasn't finished.

When he was alone at the microphone again, the critic said, "That's all right. Darren reads me. That's all I want. And because he reads me, he knows the truth."

Black Swan is a remake. It's not Suspiria, Perfect Blue, Red Shoes, etc. I've seen this movie before, but I can't remember the film title, but I will

You do realize Roger Ebert himself called White a "highly paid troll" on his website. It isn't only filmmakers that despise White's smugly contrarian bent.

It was a bit of delightful trash, but Natalie Portman is very good in it. So it wasn't a total wash.

An awards show is not the time for anyone to air thier negative opinions about artists, even if they have some validity. To do it from a stage, on a night when people are supposed to be getting recognized for their achievements, is, if nothing else, just colossally rude.

Didn't anyone think... Maybe this guy isn't cut out to be the host of an awards show? It seems like the organization knew that this fool was going to ambush the creative people without whom he wouldn't have a job, and they condoned it. Ugh!

I seriously do a double-take and minor re-evaluation of my opinion whenever I agree with Mr. White in a review. I loved Winter's Bone, Black Swan, Toy Story 3 (I could go on, but that would be tedious), he hated all of them. Whatever. I loved Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. He loved it. I loathed Up In The Air and frankly shared the same opinions about that bastardized adaptation as he did. Yes, he should not call for Noah Baumbach's mother to get a retroactive abortion and he should have done better research in his Toy Story 3 review but, what really sent me over the edge, and highlights his trolly-ness, was when The Hurt Locker was released in the summer, he initally called it one of the best movies on the war. I know, shocking that a film with a high-90s RT rating was met with his approval. Only when he did his 'Better than... 2009' (He does not do 'Best of', he this [this film] is better than [that film]), he began calling the film overrated, trivial, and apolitical and not as good as Jim Sheridan remake (and I would say mediocre remake) of Brothers. It could be argued it was those things, but to months later go from calling it a great war film to that reeks of contrarianism. I guess he couldn't handle it getting all that critical praise and being on so many many Top Ten lists. Honestly, the guy should stick to talking about Spielberg, De Palma, and Michael Jackson.

Seriously, way to under-report and misrepresent the facts, Musto. Every other media news outlet actually reported White's attacks on the other celebs, directors, and reporters except for you. I don't know why I should bother reading your column if you're going to continue doing a lazy job of it.

Where were Woody Buzz? They have a right to be pissed, too.

White is an ASSHOLE who should be fired and all you can say is Aronofsky trashed him? OMG nice reporting Douchbag.

I thought Aronofsky was in bad form to fight back against a critic in a roomful of critics.

But I agree that White made a few remarks that seemed equally self aggrandizing, like ending the event by saying he was glad no awards were given to "Greenberg".

They key is to ignore White. Make him irrelevant...he feeds off the attention, he clearly said it. He just wants to be in conversation. He's a contrarian. Thats what he does. He does it purposely. The problem with White is not that he trashes universally praised films. I could live with someone not liking a certain film, it's the fact that he praises really bad films. Yes, I know its opinion...but ummm...NO. I've read his reviews. He writes well, however irrelevant and ludicrous some of the things he writes are but yea, no one should pay him attention. All he does is take really good films out of context and attack every little flaw they have, then make up crazy reasons why they're bad and write out those same reasons so well you might actually think he's on to something. Most of his reasoning is so completely irrelevant that only a "maybe", "barely", or "technically speaking" can bring any relevance to them. He does like some good films though and thats how I know he's purposely a contrarian, which is why I dislike him even more.

a perfect critique as to why white is such a douche, well done.

I don't get that he was nasty to Williams. He said he liked her in a certain movie and she joked that it was 10 years ago. He wasn't overtly dissing her.

And how was he dissing Fincher? He made a remark that Social Network came out the same week a teen killed himself because of Facebook bullying. I took that as a swipe against FB, not Fincher. (And by the way, I thought it was off base. It's like being mad at AT&T if someone gets a harrassment call.)

Michael, why do you conviently forget to mention that "Miss" White also was nasty to David Fincher, Noah Baumbach, and Michelle Williams? He also accuses people of being racist when they do not agree with him. An old hat, unfounded accusation that does not fly any longer.

Do you stand up for White bacause he is also gay?

Alessandra
Alessandra

Oh please. Fincher's best film appeared this year, Baumbach recycles the same tiresome crap over and over, and Michelle Williams has one expression to work with (though I nevertheless like her as an actress). White's right. So what if he's gay, you got a problem with that?

Fuck Armond White. Aronofsky was too nice.

Armond White rules. He was one of the few to call "Crash" (and I don't mean the Cronenberg film) what a it was, a piece of "TRASH."

So did a majority of people. Since it won Best Picture over Brokeback Mountain, lots of people were pissed. Plus this douche critic also said There Will Be Blood was terrible.

That movie was TERRIBLE!!! it was a movie based around homoerotic tension and the new girl taking your place. Just watch Showgirls if that's what u want to see. It's much more interesting.

'Critic' is one of the least admirable professions, I think - making your living blessing or tearing down the creations of others. But that doesn't mean what they say is always wrong. And I saw clips of Black Swan online, accompanied by pr bullshit like 'Watch this amazing clip from Black Swan!' and it's just Winona Ryder doing the same old Winona Ryder impression or Natalie Portman bugging her eyes out.

WOW! I wish I was there to watch that unfold !
