Fox News, Watch Out! Here Comes an Even Dumber Channel!

It's ONN (Onion News Network), a show on IFC which amusingly spoofs the excesses, biases, and crassness of certain cable news.

Unlike Fox, it's supposed to be funny.

At a panel discussion at the Paley Center the other day, the faux-anchors (staying in character) told us, "We have 30% more screaming than the other channels" and "We only have morbidly obese lawyers so they're physically intimidating."

One of the segment reports they're proudest of is their "War Widow Makeover Week" because those women need to look so much better, after all.

Another was their expose of Facebook as an information-gathering service run by the CIA. (That one sounds pretty accurate, actually. As usual, satire has become the real news.)

The panel then opened up to questions from the crowd, and after a momentary silence, anchor Tucker Hope said, "No one's brave enough. You must all work for print."

They're just attempting to expand the Onion brand. That's what it's all about today, expanding the brand. Except marketers/companies get a little full of themselves when they overestimate just how much the public really wants. This is a perfect example. We'll see how it fares.

How do you satirize something that already satirizes itself? Bad idea.

I'll stick with Stewart and Colbert.
