Patti LuPone Is Great For 'Hello, Dolly!'

Two-time Tony winner Patti LuPone is in talks to star in a revival of Hello, Dolly! and already the chatterati are concerned.

"Does she have the warmth for the role?" some of them are nattering on various bored boards.

Um, yes she does.

First of all, Patti has been socko in a bunch of old Ethel Merman roles, and let's not forget that Dolly! was originally written for Merman, who eventually even played the part.

"But the Merm wasn't the warmest tool in the Broadway prop shed," I hear you say, snapping your Fosse fingers.

Well, while Patti certainly can summon the brassy manipulativeness of the moxieish matchmaker woman, I bet she could ladle up the charm too.

After all, in Gypsy, she and Boyd Gaines made something special of their romantic scenes, playing up the playfulness, with lots of physicality and humor.

After an imperfect fit in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, she deserves a juicy, classic starring role.

So hush up and just let her do it before the parade passes by.

Cal....Patti LuPone doesn't mind being in a supportive role so long the actors and crew love doing the show, and love and respect each other. Patti LuPone love working with great actors and directors. Patti LuPone right now likes do concert type production shows because it gives her a chance to see the audience reaction and if she has some other projects going on she has the chance not to overbook. Beside that, she love doing her conccert tour. I would love to see her in a play, just like Master Class.

She was actually quite warm in the Encores! "Can Can" at times--"dolly" could be good with the right director

I think Patti would be great as Dolly. Better choice than Barbra who did the movie and was't half bad. Good choice for Patti if she does it...after Women on the Verge fiasco

I would love to listen to Patti LuPone's version of "Before the Parade". Her voice is a hurricane of emotional power.

After her core fan base of 100 gay men such as Andrew Gans see the show, then who?? She is not a star, just loud, available, and affordable. They should go after Bette Midler who is a STAR, would be fine and funny, and sell tickets.

I am SO tired of Miss Lupone, who thinks she can play anything, playing the "Miss Broadway" ticket to the hilt. I couldn't really care less if she does Dolly, since it's a lousy show anyway, but give it a rest Patti - you can't play EVERYTHING.

Women on the Verge isn't "current" anymore. It died a merciful death earlier this month.

Bernadette Peters would be a better choice. I like Patti in certain roles. And have witnessed her sincere warmth in person (not on Stage) I just don't see this as a role for her

Are you forgetting that they did just that with pearl Bailey?

why don´t they hire a black woman for the role of dolly?! hello! broaden the scope of roles a bit! a jennifer-holiday type in her dreamgirl prime!vanessa williams in kiss of the spider woman proved that!

@rolph: My sentiments exactly. And Channing had a better figure, charm, and charisma.

Hey did you hear about that one time that LuPone was in this show called Gypsy and was a genuine STAR, even to tourists that had never heard of her, and had only heard legends of her performance on stage in the show? OH, YEAH!!

Bitch, she can play about anything and Dolly is a great show-you lose two points from your gay card!

uh... Rolph..are you in a time warp? Pearl Bailey did the Broadway and touring production between 1967--1969) and a short stint on Broadway from Nov. -Dec. 1975. It's been a while.

Patti actually has a pretty nice figure; she's just short. I know it's a few years ago, but check out Son of Sam.

The point is, Broadway's LaVon Fisher-Wilson just played Dolly at the Fulton. It's no longer something that "needs" to be done-- the role is officially color-blind. The role should go to someone who deserves it, be it LuPone or some other legend, and not to someone whose seeming disadvantage (gender, race, or sexuality) for you entitles them to it.

And Pearl Bailey's is my favorite of the cast recordings
