Streisand In Talks To Do Gypsy!

barbara-streisand.jpg
It's a gay man's wet dream.

Singer, Oscar winner, star, and Donna Karan wearer Barbra Streisand is in negotiations to play the fiercely tunnel-visioned Mama Rose in a movie of Gypsy, according to The Post's Michael Riedel.

Normally I'd say "Enough with Gypsy!" but the chance to see Streisand back on the big screen in a starring role that involves singing, emoting, and other things not found in Little Fockers would be too delicious.

Interestingly, the show's book writer Arthur Laurents is quoted as saying that he wants Babs to attack the savage, brutal aspects of the character.

Funny, in Patti LuPone's memoir, Patti says her goal was to play Rose as a basically sympathetic person who loves her girls, and Laurents went along with it.

But who cares? No quibbling here. Bring on Streisand as Rose.

She's got nothing to hit but the heights!

And Natalie Portman would make a fierce Gypsy, no?

Give her the role! It's hard enough for old gals to get parts nowadays.

think Bette Midler's version was great. Origional movie is great. Don't need another one.

Eek! Since the uber-controlling Laurents tried (in vain) to get "revolutionary" with his recent Broadway incarnation of "West Side Story," I think he should REALLY get "revolutionary" with "Gypsy" and write a new role for Ms. Streisand -- Mama Rose's Mama!

Oh Lord this is spectacular! It's a given, she's gotta play it. She's done Yentel for her father and now Mama Rose for her mother!

And the possibilities - The big questions is who plays the old strippers??? They're younger than Mama but older than Gypsy. My vote is for Bernadette Peters (ballet) LuPone (electric) and Tyne Daly (trumpet) that will cover them all and nobody is left out!

As for Gypsy herself, well it has to be Jennifer Aniston. She looks like Streisand and it would be really interesting to see her play against type . Or Maybe - Madonna!!! Can't you just see those two going at it!! And let's have David La Chappelle direct !! Here's hoping !!

And that dancing boy - let's give it to James Marsden. Put him in some tight pants already!!

Even if Barbra can't hit those high notes anymore, this would be the most "delicious" as Michael Musto put it, role Streisand has done since, I don't know, ever? What a way to end the most amazing musical film career in history. Yes, Michael, bring on Streisand as Rose!!!!!!!

Who the hell ever could have tolerated Carol Channing in 70mm for 2 & 1/2 hours in Hello Dolly movie? Barbra was brilliant and added sex to the dumb story to make the character 3 dimensional and memorable. She looks great today and better than Ethel Merman did back in the day when she starred on Broadway. This could be a great clash of the titans fever-dream of a movie musical and I can't wait for it to happen. She began w/ Jule Styne & Authur Laurents w/ Funny Girl and it is fitting she may end w/ them too w/ Gypsy. But better get a tough director to reign her in and make her be directed for a change. And I want Lindsay Lohan as Gypsy Rose Lee. That will get people talking.

@Theatre Queen #7215: Thank you for summing it up so well. And at the risk of insulting more Streisand fans, she was to old to do Yentl! Barbra can you hear me?

But Sarah Bernhardt continued to appear in younger roles, too....

Streisand's Mama Rose will be all about the nails and the lighting and the camera angle and the Vaseline through which they will have to shoot her.

Would I go see it? Maybe. But Merman will always be the best in that character.

I just had a delicious mental orgasm thinking of Barbra Streisand on "Rose's Turn" with her voluptuous hips, big boobs, retro curls, and big raspy "ME!".

I'm not old enough to have seen Ethel Merman, but no other actress I've seen play this role comes close to making the same impact as she did--even if I can only compare them with Merman's singing on the original Gypsy soundtrack. Well, maybe Angela Lansbury, but just barely.

And judging by the lengthy comments here, I've concluded that every other gay man in the world would pay $$ just to hear Streisand sings names in a phone book.

Michael, Michael, Michael... what have you done!?Michael, Michael, Michael... what have you done?!You've thrown a whole gaggle of theatre queens into a tizzy. (Or at least one poster who has felt the need to repeat himself eight times.)Barbra WAS too young to play Dolly Levi. We only remember her in the part because we only have grainy Ed Sullivan video excerpts of Pearl Bailey and Carol (not Carrol) Channing othewise. And now... Barbra IS too old to play Mama Rose. The camera can only lie so much after all. Natalie P will be 30 this June and may be too old too.

Everyone's talking about Barbra's too old to play the part I just looked up Ethel Merman's date of Birth she was born in 1916 and Patti Lupone who was born in 1949 only 6 years younger than Barbra Streisand and she was the best Rose I have seen so far and I have seen every production except Ethel Merman. So, age is not a factor it's not like she's 90. She has the bigger than life personality like rose. the acting chops and the amazing voice. How laughable that someone compared it to being like Lucy in "Mame." Lucy could not sing Barbra Streisand will belt out that score and leave the audience spellbound she will finally give the stage version the screen version it deserves, maybe even better. Let's just hope she ends up doing it. People used to complain about "Funny Lady" and "Hello, Dolly." Compared to what's being released today and the caliber of actors those two movies are American classics. It's a sad commentary on the film world when Sandra Bullock who admits she's no great actress wins an Academy Award for a film that is the equivalent to an after school special.

This is a dream of mine to see Barbra play Mama Rose. I have read some of these comments and they are ridiculous. The mass' don't know how old Rose is. I have seen every production of "Gypsy" except Ethel Merman and The best so far was Patti Lupone. The worst was Bernadette Peters. Believe me Barbra will finally give it the screen presentation it deserves. You say she won't be able to belt out those songs. Watch her. She has that voice preserved for years she is the best choice for this role. I would be in heaven if she did it. Someone compared her to Lucy in "Mame" Lucy could not sing Barbra is the greatest female singer in the world. I guarantee you she will turn it into a classic. Everyone said she was too young for Dolly and she pulled that off brilliantly. The movie is what everyone remembers not Carrol Channing in the Musical. It would be perfect doing another Jule Styne score like "Funny Girl" these shows are his two best. Arthur Laurents who directed her in "I Can Get it For you Wholesale" and wrote "The Way We Were." her love Stephen Sondheim who wrote the lyrics and the original play directed by Jerome Robbins who partially directed "Funny Girl." on Broadway. As Mr. Musto say's, "She's got nothing to hit but the heights." Barbra loves full circle stories and if this is going to be her last major role she would be coming full circle with all the people she started with. Believe me she can still belt out those tunes. I saw her live in 2006 and she had no problem belting out any songs. Someone says her "overproduced" CD's her most recent "Love is the Answer" is hardly overproduced if you get the deluxe version on one disk she is just singing with a quartet. As she said in her book her voice was hoarse from screaming over buzz saws and hammering for 5 years. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE TALENTS OF BARBRA STREISAND. If she does "Gypsy" it will be a masterpiece. Roz Russell whom I love did not do the play justice. She cannot sing and the sets were awful and she did not play Rose properly. Trust me Streisand will pull it off and give it the screen version for eternity. Go Barbra

I think she is too old too but I am still excited. Mama Rose is the Hamlet of musical theater and Streisand, for all her neurosis, remains the most brilliant singing actress of the 20th century.

Js341

The age issue is a non issue Rose is the Mother not the stripper. Arthur Laurents who wrote the book gave Barbra his blessing and knows that she can capture this complex Mother. I agree with you on everything else you say. There is no one else in Hollywood who could play this part. She was born to do it. I wish she would of done 20 years ago Let's just hope she ends up doing it now. As the one writer wrote in . She doesn't seem to follow through with projects she starts ie "The Normal Heart." Yet, if she does this it would be the perfect capstone to an illustrious film career. I am appalled that someone compared the greatest singer of the 20th Century to Lucy in "Mame." That is just absurd! Barbra, would not do a role unless she knew she could pull it off.

Bad idea. The Roz Russell Mama Rose and the Bette Midler Mama Rose were both execrable. The theater can accommodate the outsize emotions of this show much better than the movies can. And, yes, Streisand is too old, no matter how much she's pulled back and pumped up with Botox.

Js341
Js341

I agree with you regarding the other two versions that is why Striesand must do it to give it a screen version that will live up to the play. Age is ridiculous as Rose is not a glam character they don't give her an age. It would be different if she were playing Louise. Your comment on the theater can accomodate the outsize emotions of this show better than the movies. I have seen every production of the show except Ethel Merman. Barbra Streisand is bigger than life personality that is why she could pull it off when Roz an Bette could not. Trust me The age issue is a non issue as Rose is the Mother not Louise who becomes Gypsy. I love this show so much and want Barbra Streisand to do it since I saw her in "Funny Girl" if anyone can pull it off she can as Mr. Musto says: "She's got nothing to hit but the heights." It would be a perfect capstone to her illustrious film career. I hope she does it and so does Arthur Laurents who wrote it. He is the writer and he doesn't think she is too old to play the part. Also Patti Lupone who just did it in 2008 was in her late 50's and she was the best Rose I have seen in any production up to now. Trust me Barbra will leave the audience spellbound.

Js341
Js341

The mass' don't know the age of Rose. It's the acting and singing and directing that the movie will rise or fall upon. Everyone said she was too young to play Dolly. Meanwhile, that's the version the public remembers not the musical play with Carrol Channing another one who can't sing. If she were in Dolly the movie it would of been a disaster. Streisand lights up the screen every time she's on in "Hello, Dolly. I never got the too young thing about "Hello, Dolly. How old do you think people lived to in 1890?

MarkS

From a dramatic standpoint Streisand is definitely up to it. But I would worry that the soundtrack would end up sounding like her recent over-produced, over-technically enhanced albums. Her voice wouldn't be right at this point. And that's not what the show is all about. She's just a little long in the tooth to be playing Rose. The end product might end up there in that pantheon of bad movie musicals along with Lucy's ego driven version of Mame.

bsomers

This is Mamma Rose not Julie Andrews. Barbra or anyone else should not sound "pretty" in her vocals except maybe when she is trying to seduce Herbie. Is she too old? Sure. But hell the thought of her doing this part with the right cast is downright exciting. What was the last film musical that bowled you over? Done properly this will be her second Best Actress Oscar.

Js341
Js341

Hardly, Lucy could not sing. Striesand is the greatest singer in history. I gurantee you she will belt out that score. Also, you say her recent albums are over produced. Obviously, you did not get "love is the answer" her most recent as she sings with just a quartet on one disc and very limited orchestrations on the other. It entered the charts at #1. As far as age is concerned why is she too old to play Rose? Pattie Lupone just did it on Broadway and she is 60 and was the best Rose so far. I have seen every production except the Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters was awful productions. She could not sing the score and the whole production was poorly executed. Trust me Barbra would give this play the screen version it finally deserves. Age will not matter it's not a glam role.

JonnyOneNote

I dunno, whatever happened to her producing "The Normal Heart"? She just doesn't seem to follow through on legit projects anymore. By the time this version of "Gypsy" gets to the cameras, Mama Rose will be Grandma Rose.

Sure would love to see Babs do this! Singing, being tough as nails. What do you think, nice mamas are going to stay in style for ever?

Js341

I agree with you 100% she will do the role justice. With her talent it will be a show stopper and finally give this Musical the screen version it deserves. Roz Russell did not serve the material well. She only got the job as her Husband was the producer and I love Roz Russell yet she cannot sing. And the whole movie looks cheap and directed poorly the best part of the original film version was Natalie Wood. I agree with you Barbra would be perfect for the part. Age means nothing. Rose is not a glam character. I would be concerned about age if she were playing Louise.

Patti LuPone

Isn't she a little OLD to play the mother of these two young girls? Wouldn't she be better cast as the cow?

I agree it would have been better if she did early on. Yet just happy that she is considering it and has Arthur Laurents blessing. I know if she does this people will leave the movie theater spellbound.
