The Oscar Nominations Are Here! Who Got Shafted?

• Didn't Barbara Streisand hand out that award? Suprised my tv set didn't explode.

• Too bad Julia Roberts can't rally people to give HER any kind of nomination these days.

• Has Oscar actually gotten credible? No. It's a popularity contest.

• When, oh WHEN, will it be time to finally retire this category? Each year, we have to be subjected to another toneless, tuneless performance by Randy Newman singing another stultifyingly dull Randy Newman song that sounds exactly like every OTHER fucking Randy Newman song. It's finally time to put this category out of its misery. I mean, "the day the music died," for me, was in 2005 when the winning song was "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp". Brilliant....

• PS: I wonder who'll sing the nominated songs on the telecast on February 27. If they go for the people who actually sang the songs in the movies, then we'll see performances by: Gwyneth Paltrow Dido and A. R. Rahman Randy Newman and Mandy Moore.

• I remember when Page won. F. Murray Abraham announced "The winner is the greatest actress in the English language" and half the room stood up, lol.

• I used to work for a "member of the Academy" who secured his membership by being a money man for a low end studio. In 1985 I tried lobbying for Geraldine Page in Trip to Bountiful, and he said, "Oh, yeah, I voted for her. She was great in Agnes of God. Actually she was, on Broadway, but Anne Bancroft did the movie, for which SHE was nominated. Fortunately Gerry won anyway.

• Guggenheim out...that was interesting...Now must see Animal Kingdom & Blue Valentine! It seems pr blitz didn't work out all that well...I hope...although a friend is a long time member, and although I try to advise...he always votes for his friends!

• Julianne Moore was robbed!

• How did that awful Burlesque song that Cher sings actually win a Golden Globe?? Actually, don't answer that.

• I love them both.

• “True Grit” did amazingly well: 10 nominations, and in many of the major categories. The original only got nominated for Best Actor and Best Song. I think that says all we need to know about the overall quality of movies, and quantity of really good ones, in 1969 compared to 2010. The new version was really, really close to the old one in so many ways.
