The Oscar Nominations Are Here! Who Got Shafted?

Categories: Oscars

Actually, not that many people.

Though I predicted the royal shafting of quality actors like Jacki Weaver and John Hawkes, they actually got in there because Oscar has decided it likes grit and realness!

(I got 29 out of 35 right, which is not embarrassing.)

The big winner was The King's Speech with 12 nominations, followed by True Grit with 10 (I told you they like grit) and Social Network and Inception with eight each.

Amazingly, Javier Bardem secured a best actor nod for Biutiful even though, as I reported, the movie truly divides people.

(Julia Roberts' campaign urging awards groups to stop ignoring Bardem obviously had an impact!)

And in another shocking blow to the gays, Burlesque got nothing, not even for its songs.

The Best Song category seems to include only four nominees instead of the usual five, in a blatant attempt to keep the Burlesque ditties out of there!

Has Oscar actually gotten credible?

See all the nominations here.

I couldn't agree more. I just checked TheOscarSite.com and Randy Newman has been nominated 19 times, winning in 2001 for Monsters, Inc. 19 crap songs so I guess this year makes 20. Hopefully, like last year, they won't even bother to perform the nominated songs on the show.

Too bad Julia Roberts can't rally people to give HER any kind of nomination these days.

Has Oscar actually gotten credible? No. It's a popularity contest.

PS: I wonder who'll sing the nominated songs on the telecast on February 27. If they go for the people who actually sang the songs in the movies, then we'll see performances by:

Gwyneth Paltrow

Dido and A. R. Rahman

Randy Newman

and Mandy Moore.

When, oh WHEN, will it be time to finally retire this category? Each year, we have to be subjected to another toneless, tuneless performance by Randy Newman singing another stultifyingly dull Randy Newman song that sounds exactly like every OTHER fucking Randy Newman song. It's finally time to put this category out of its misery. I mean, "the day the music died," for me, was in 2005 when the winning song was "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp". Brilliant....

I remember when Page won.

F. Murray Abraham announced "The winner is the greatest actress in the English language" and half the room stood up, lol.

I used to work for a "member of the Academy" who secured his membership by being a money man for a low end studio. In 1985 I tried lobbying for Geraldine Page in Trip to Bountiful, and he said, "Oh, yeah, I voted for her. She was great in Agnes of God. Actually she was, on Broadway, but Anne Bancroft did the movie, for which SHE was nominated. Fortunately Gerry won anyway.

Guggenheim out...that was interesting...Now must see Animal Kingdom & Blue Valentine! It seems pr blitz didn't work out all that well...I hope...although a friend is a long time member, and although I try to advise...he always votes for his friends!

How did that awful Burlesque song that Cher sings actually win a Golden Globe?? Actually, don't answer that.

“True Grit” did amazingly well: 10 nominations, and in many of the major categories. The original only got nominated for Best Actor and Best Song. I think that says all we need to know about the overall quality of movies, and quantity of really good ones, in 1969 compared to 2010. The new version was really, really close to the old one in so many ways.
