What "Turned Me Gay"?

Thumbnail image for mustoadvice.jpg
I reveal it in this saucy interview in the new Dirty Mag by Paul Bruno, who raided my photo files while probing my psyche.

The answer may not please most conventionally-thinking people, but as always, I gotta speak the truth. It's genetic! But I don't think being gay is!

Much more shocking, though, is the photo Bruno took to go along with the Q&A.

It looks like my bulge is enormous!

This spread, as it were, is going to help my social life a whole bunch!

I jokingly blame my straight blue eyed blond swedish descent counsins for turning me gay. They were older than me and used to love to wrestle. They would tackle me and I got into it. They stopped when they got older, and I decided I liked outdoor plumbing better. Do straight people get toaster ovens if they convert people to being gay?

Michael, that was a GREAT interview! The image of you as a young man seeing movies alone and writing reviews on index cards is poignant..(Who's going to play "Young Michael" in the film version of your memoirs?).

Has it really been twenty-six years?

That looks like a Romero Britto.

You are correct Sir... Thanks!!!

Around the bedroom are various portraits: a 1980s-style portrait of himself by Romero Britto,http://www.observer.com/2010/d...

... and another on a laminated tabletop ("It doesn't have legs; otherwise, I would love to eat on a painting of myself") by Anthony Zito.

Couldn't find it on his site:http://www.zitogallery.com/abo...

Now that's what I call a revealing interview. And I like that pic with Sylvia Miles! I had one of those real attentive Dads, a child psychologist, who was also very expressive ... so it was probably my mother.

Bravo!! I loved every delicious word of it, Michael! But no mention of the mint jelly and three cups of coffee a day?

It was Elton John ! My last girlfriend in college was an Elton freak. Every night before we went to bed, she would stack all of her Elton albums on the stereo (up through Captain Fantastic). I had to listen to them all every night while we were having sex. The next year I was screwing her freshman little brother. Goodbye pussy. Thanks Elton !

Jesus, Mary and Joseph is right, Musto. What the hell have you got in those pants? Your life savings?

I believe I am gay because of straight siblings who were nurtured the same as I was.

Mikey, you might been "nutured gay" but others maybe more "nature." Personally, I don't think I was turned gay unless it was by the hottness of men. Ma & pa more or less regular and straight siblings who were nurtured the same as I was.

I believe I am gay because Gaga is responsible for the DADT repeal.

Michael, I %100 adore you, but how on EARTH can you say with a straight face that Gaga is responsible for the DADT repeal?

Good interview - I wish interviews could be longer. Also I always enjoy seeing sections of your apartment decor.

I believe I am gay because your father was remote, too.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, putting aside the enormous polyester pant fold, your eclectic, kitsch laden apartment seems dust free.

So were any of your arguments with Quentin Crisp, the self-proclaimed "Stately Homo of England" deal with housekeeping?

He moved to New York in the early 1980's and lived, as ever, alone in a one room apartment which he famously never cleaned. "After four years," he quipped, "you don't notice the dust." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_...

...and I really consciously felt I needed the affection of a man because I felt that my father was remote. He was loving in his own way, but I could never get any real intimacy from him.

If as you believe, it is 'nurture' over 'nature', why so phallocentric???

Great interview....it really illuminates how you are the real chronicler of New York's past quarter century (and beyond) and lived to tell! If this is an indicator, looks like a promising new magazine. Small quibble: They should re-think the use of all bold-face capital letters in the questions...it comes across more as an angry inquisition than a Q&A.
