Is Priscilla Keeping The Drag Queens Under Wraps?

priscilla.jpg

You're looking at the image that's above the big Times Square marquee for the Broadway version of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

It's also the main visual on the show's site's homepage.

As you can see, it features three gussied-up divas in a campy pose.

But they're women!

I think!

They're not the three main characters of the show, who don drag and tour the Outback, just like in the movie.

Is this some kind of joke?

Would a Dreamgirls billboard feature three white characters with their arms up?

Well, the show's publicist, Adrian Bryan-Brown, has a response:

"On the road to Broadway, Priscilla has used a range of images connected with the production for different signage and advertising.

"The choice of the Divas was made for the sign above the Palace Theatre because the image had worked for other productions and because the girls look great! (If there is a confusion about sexual identity, I don't see it, but I think that's part of the fun!)

"The Divas are the storytellers in Priscilla, so it is fitting that they be the first characters people get to know.

Yes, a lot of the Priscilla campaign is a tease--we hope the audience will be surprised and entertained by the design and costumes when they see the show.

"If you would like to offer a sneak peak at what Nick Adams, Tony Sheldon, and Will Swenson look like in the show, I have attached some photos from the Toronto run. More will be revealed when a full-on television commercial starts airing soon!"

Well, I've included one of those shots of the three guys (with the Divas in the background). They deserve the exposure.

Hell, I'd go if I had the money to blow.

Hmm. Unintentional rhyming.

Wow.

A load of ignorant comments on here.

The girls are beautiful!

And maybe they don't want to give away the surprises of the show... Why do people always think the worst thing? They are not going to produce a musical based on the film if they had a problem with drag queens!

Show is awesome! Marquee is great! Just go see the show! It is the most fun you will have had at a theatre in a long time! Saw this cast in Toronto! Absolutely amazing! The leads are wonderful, and the DIVAS are equally as wonderful!

Oh, and the DIVAS image was used extensively in Sydney and Melbourne Production PR, so its not just something thats been done for Times Square...

I saw this show in Melbourne, Australia (where I live)... and it really is a lot of fun! There are some really clever and really fabulous moments in the show. Yes, most of the show is spectacle... but would you expect anything else from a musical based on a movie based on a drag show?Having said that, the production has heart and soul... Tony Sheldon (the nephew of Helen Reddy, no less) originated the role of Bernadette (the aging transsexual...) and has played the role in all its Australian and English productions.Seriously - take a gamble and go and check it out with some of your best friends for a fun night out!

"It's a tease".

Yeah, but if the show is still running in two years, I bet it'll be the same billboard!

This is very wussy p.r.

"Exploit the drag queens, but don't let the tourists know what they're getting!"

Drag's sad. There, I said it. It's a sub-cultural art form and has historical antecedents, the Egyptians, Kabuki, the actors playing women in Shakespeare's time. But drag is really anthropologically quite similar to minstrel. There's a lot more sadness behind the get-up than all the "joy" emoted. The film Paris Is Burning is tragic. The film Priscilla was really hard to bear and portrayed once again by straight performers, alas.

You know what's sad? As I've learned since the day I was born, no matter what I think or do with the best of intentions and to express who I am, there will always be an expert on how life should be, such as yourself, to dismiss it and tell me that I'm wrong. Because you're view of the world is the only acceptable one. That's sad.

There's always gotta be a little sad mixed in with the happy. And weren't minstrel shows white people pretending to be black people?

Drag ain't sad! It's a cabaret! Are you watching Ru Paul's Drag Race 3? Pretty fun! Though contestants are sad when they fuckitup or get sent home.

I totally agree, Monsieurpatric. I am deeply invested in gender roles. If people don't adhere to ancient binary views on what is male and female, the world will spin off of its axis!

Why are they so afraid that middle Americal would be scared away by drag queens? Didn't "To Wong Foo" teach us that small town middle America LOVES drag queens?

Savannah Montgomery

Right, don't they come here to do "edgy" stuff like see drags...on B'way...and Kelsey Grammer?

Well, like you say, the three Duvas sort of look like drag queens anyway, lol (especially the middle one).

Sounds to me like they don't want to scare away potential tourists. A lot of people know 'Prisicilla' is a drag musical, but some may not, so they're being namby pamby about it. Sad.

Years ago I saw Love, Valor, Compassion and one hag from the stix was so non-plussed to see naked dick and balls that every time a scene would open with nudity, she would sigh and woo! Oh! so loudly that it was clear she didn't have any idea about what her tour gave her tickets to see. I wondered why she didn't notice the whole theater was able to deal except her. Like 10 times she called attention to herself like she was overcome and damn near had the vapors.
