The 10 Best Female Outfits in Movie History

Categories: Fashion, Featured

Who cares about the men? They always wear suits or sweaty T-shirts.

But from the beginning of cinema, Hollywood's ladies have gotten swathed and feathered and dressed and undressed in ways that have made the fashion world rock with diversity and delight.

My 10 all-time fave looks are:

10) Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. She was so divinely labeled out, I was scared a her!

sharon.jpg

9) Sharon Tate in Valley of the Dolls. "A little top-heavy" as a gorge showgirl. Even better is her metallic dress with matching coat but I can't seem to find a photo of that.

dorthy.jpg

8) Dorothy Dandridge in Carmen Jones. A femme fatale with not an ounce of fatale. She was Bizet but not bizarre--so freakin' sexy. And that flower!

kate.jpg

7) Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Virgin Queen. How else you would you dress for your coronation? What a queen! Fierce, girl.

6) Liz Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. She proved it's not what you wear, it's what you don't wear--and how you don't wear it.

The business suits belong to the professional and formal type of clothing. They can be worn in formal gatherings. Comfort is probably the most important advantage of wearing it. If you're wearing it, one can move comfortably making it one of the best options for ladies.Formal Pant Suits

Diz, Marilyn and Dorthy dresses are amazing.. These dresses should have to be on the top of the list.. I totally agree with you that the Hollywood ladies are best in terms of fashion in every aspect.. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful post.. ________________ dressy pant suits

There are certainly many many others but I applauded this list all the way through. Brava!

Mark Anthony

Charlotte Rampling in The Night Porter. Her dress for the opera was gorgeous, that camel coloured coat was elegant, but what stick in memory are the braces and SS officer’s cap that she barely wore for her cabaret number. Well, they certainly stuck in my memory!

To me, Audrey Hepburn's beauty is incomparable.

Anne

The epitome of beauty.

I liked Scarlett's red dress better, when she was forced to go to Melanie's party, she looked so beautiful there

Michael, you missed Bette Davis in her cocktail dress in All About Eve; but I still love you.

Tilda's at he most Fashion Fabulous in "Edward II."

But here's another vote for Grace Kelly in "Rear Window."

Paciano65

You missed the following women:

1. Barbra Streisand as Lady Melinda Tentrees in "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever"2. Catherine Deneuve in "Belle de Jour" and "Umbrellas of Cherbourg"3. Maggie Cheung in "In the Mood for Love"4. Faye Dunaway in "Eyes of Laura Mars"5. Juliette Binoche in "Chocolat"

How about Tilda Swinton in Orlando?

What about Michael Musto in The Evolution Will Be Televised or Party Monster!??

Very early indie, incredibly only half-remembered, Anne Carlisle in "Liquid Sky".

DIANA ROSS in MAHOGANYespecially, in the scene where slaps the shit out of anthony perkins.

Torti

Well, if Musto had put the ones people are chiming in with, he would have surely gotten shrieks of "What about Marilyn's Seven-Year Itch Dress? And what about Marlene in Blonde Venus?"

What about Marilyn's Orry-Kelly designed naked glitter dresses in "Some Like It Hot"?

Or Lana Turner's all-white (except for one black outfit) costumes in "The Postman Always Rings Twice"?

Or Lana's "100 beads and a prayer" outfit in "The Prodigal?

Surely, Judy's pinafore in "The Wizard of Oz," with those ruby slippers!

And the countless outfits that Adrian made for Garbo? God, could that broad wear clothes or what?

I cannot even believe that Lauren Bacall or Katherine Hepburn don't appear on this list. In ANY movie, they looked FABULOUS. But, I suppose if you are limiting it to 10, you have to draw the line somewhere. I tell you I'd lose Cate Blanchett as the queen and substitute with Jessica Alba in Sin City. Unforgettable.

Well, as I said, Dietrich in anything is worthy of top 10.

Dietrich looked great in men's formal wear, as in the infamous flower/kiss scene in Morocco and in Blonde Venus. In The Scarlet Empress, the sets and her costumes are over the top, even for her. I think my favorite of hers is the leather outfit in Dishonored.

Azra

you forgot to mention the gorilla suit Marlene donned in Blonde Venus!

Bellestarrr1946
Bellestarrr1946

Bellestarrr here..of course Mae West..nobody wore costumes like Mae did...fat, over forty and fabulous in her sequins, rhinestone spiderwebs, hats, furs...she was dressed by Adrian, Schaperelli, Travis Banton, Edith Head..all the famous costume designers of the period. When Mae made an entrance in anything..carnival hoochy dancer, singing grand opera...everyone's teeth fell out!!

Carmen Miranda's outfits in The Gang's All Here.

Garbo's costumes by Adrian; particularly the party dress she's wearing during the boudoir encounter with Robert Taylor in Camille.

Also Dietrich later in the same film wearing white top hat and tails outfit, fondling the passing showgirls...

Another fun category might be women wearing men's clothes, and men wearing women's clothes; Dietrich's Navy officer's uniform in Seven Sinners, and Micky Rooney as Carmen Miranda.

Michael, your's are great and Movielover's right about the 1939 production of The Women. How about Liz in Cleopatra? Julie Andrews in Thoroughly Modern Millie? Loved Kate Hepburn's simple outfits in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Jean Harlow's final dress in Dinner at Eight is a showstopper. And the red dresses Monroe and Russell wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes are also eyepopping.

She wore a 160-pound man? As what--a hat?

What? No Kay Francis wearing Orry-Kelly?

Frnklin2001
Frnklin2001

Liz, Audrey and Faye actually sold clothes with their looks. So did Joan Crawford in "Letty Lynton."

But you should at least include Steve McQueen for "The Thomas Crown Affair." Men's wear has never been the same.

Musto

I actually almost put Bette in Baby Jane.

Muscato

Margot Channing's party dress - perhaps the most character-driven gown in cinema history, from the assymetrical neckline to the odd fur trim to the emphatic pockets (so handy for cigarettes and storming around with)....

Rick Rosendall

Ingrid Bergman's white party gown from Gaslight.

Troy

This is genius! Thank you!

How about all them fab broads in The Women (1939, not the recent - horrible - remake).

For absolute knock-em dead style that's integral to the plot & character, check out Jane Birken in the final scene in Evil Under the Sun.

Sugah, you forgot Grace Kelly in Rear Window.

I considered Annie Hall, and would have to put her at #11.
