"What Is Going On in Egypt, Exactly?"

"I mean, I've heard about some kind of stuff going down there, but I just can't figure out what it is!"

This isn't a direct quote from anyone, but it's something you probably would hear in various bars around town, a lot of the clubbing populace not that big on reading about current events except for Happy Hour listings and occasional personal ads.

I mean, these are the people who think "the Middle East" means Iowa.

So what would you tell them?

How would you sum up the uprisings in Egypt for the missing-chromosomes bunch?

What is happening in Egypt today I would try to explain, is pure, unadulterated, rough-and-tumble, real-time, life-and-death 'Street Theatre', the complete opposite of the more refined, classical Japanese 'Kabuki Theatre', in which elaborately costumed performers, use stylized movements, dances, and songs in order to enact tragedies and comedies.

Today, Western political pundits use 'kabuki' incorrectly as a synonym for 'posturing'... but I digress...

I would say it's closer to 'Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol', the graphic, amoral horror entertainment, oh and the 1789–99 French Revolution (Révolution française) a period of radical social and political upheaval.

Allons enfants de la Patrie,Arise, children of the Fatherland,

Contre nous de la tyrannie,Against us, tyranny's

L'étendard sanglant est levé, (bis)Bloody banner is raised, (repeat)

Aux armes, citoyens...To arms, citizens...

- part of La Marseillaise, the revolutionary anthem. The Beatles used the opening bars as an introduction to their 1967 hit single "All You Need is Love"... but i digress.

I would say the government has swiftly and gracelessly dropped one of its closest long-term allies (yep, he's a dictator; they all are), as most of its Middle Eastern client states drop like dominios, but at least there's the scant consolation of knowing that the tanks pointed at those protestors are American which shows business was good no? The empire is crumbling.

Imagine: the Tea Party doesn't like the Press, doesn't like the President, the current administration, anyone who thinks different[ly], and since they have all the guns (and ammo) they need or could ever want.... they go on the offensive (while Sarah Palin stays safely hidden in a fallout shelter from 1955), and they try to overthrow the current government. They attack all members of the press, anyone who is not white, and boom, there you have Egypt. Only problem is: you have to reverse who the good guys/bad guys are with the U.S. version. Naturally, it's the other way around.

Not easy to distill the chaos in Egypt into simple terms, and so I'd rather ask: "What's Happening in 'Chicago'"? Just today it was announced that Christie Brinkley would be joining the Broadway company as Roxie Hart. Not to knock Ms. Brinkley, but jeez, who's next? Markie Post? Lisa Hartman? Pamela Sue Martin? Morgan Fairchild?

People are grasping for freedom in the face of a tyranny long sanctioned by the US. Unfortunately they will lose.

Inspired by the revolution in Tunisia, the people got fed up with their dictator (US backed) and took matters into their own hands and took to the streets. Unfortunately it appears the dictator is about to bring the hammer down on them.

I would try to explain the situation with the unrest for the current government, but also tell them that they really need to watch (read) the news, because it may eventually affect them in some way. Be informed.
