Gwyneth's Singing: What's Up With That?

gwyneth-paltrow-picture-1.jpg

Gwyneth Paltrow took an abrupt left turn in career emphasis when she made Country Strong and sang on Glee plus three awards shows, doing everything from slinking on a piano and crooning to a feathery Cee Lo Green and the Muppets, to standing upright at the Oscars and doing her best Carrie Underwood impression.

Well, should she keep it up or just stick to the dramatics so we're less confused?

A reporter at ABC News asked me just that question, and here's what I came up with:

"I've liked Gwyneth's voice ever since I heard that 'Cruising' duet she did with Huey Lewis. It's kind of sweet.

"She comes on with confidence and is smooth and competent enough to be a country contender.

"But some people have mixed feelings about this career switch because:

(A) They feel 'she sounds good for a non-singer.'

(B) They worry that this change of career might cause problems with her rock star husband."

I mean, if I were him, I'd be pissed!

But I conclude that Gwynnie should ignore any misgivings and keep crooning.

This whole scenario won't be over till the skinny lady sings.

After she tires of country, I foresee her tackling two more musical genres, first to break into the Spanish market (she is an "adopted daughter" of Talavera de la Reina, Spain, where at 15 she spent a year as an exchange student and learned to speak Spanish), second, to specialize in pre-war Yiddish and Romanian songs and the Eastern European style of klezmer music rarely heard in Israel in honour of her father who was of Ashkenazi Russian Jewish descent.

And at least she doesn't bop around in that cutesy way like her husband. Sheesh.

She's the new Linda McCartney. Her husband must tell her all the time, "yes, you have a lovely singing voice, honey." Of course, he can't really sing either.

Her singing is okay - but lots of people sing as well or better at any random karaoke night. She already has name recognition, but my guess is her music career isn't going anywhere. She did an image about-face when the country music film came out, using kind of crude, obvious pr - before she was like Snob-Vegetarian-Bitch, now she's nice and fun and down with the little people. .

She who must be stopped. The minute she opens her mouth to sing....zhhhhhooooOOOM! She utterly sucks the life out of an entire room! It's a rather remarkable feat, and I don't know how she does it....but it's not necessarily something we should either encourage or reward. She seems to me like a pampered Hollywood princess who just can't WAIT to show off how her singing lesson that week went. Fake. Hollow. Next.

She comes off as a phony type to me. Like she PRETENDS she's this lighthearted easy to get along with gal, but probably a bitch with a massive ego. (her website gloop or whatever it's called YIKES) ... She had to nail a "rocker" husband, so there is a disconnect with the "country" singer routine, which I predict she will abandon. How many homes does she have now, and are any of them in Tennessee? Is she still making movies? Do her kids call her Mom or Gwyneth?

Country seems to be where people can bust in when they need a career boost.

I liked (still) the "Cruising" duet (point well taken, Rick) with Huey Lewis. It's easy to listen to if you haven't seen the film (I didn't). For various reasons, I have not heard Minnie Pearl Paltrow incarnation, and the idea of her being (playing) a country singer just doesn't ring true (to be polite). Was it not Gwyneth who took issue several years back with some celeb bustin' rap because she didn't think he was exactly 'authentic'? oy.

That "Cruising" duet was disturbing, as Huey played her dad in the film.
