Johnny Depp's Six Best Performances

A chameleon with a closetful of hairdos and accents, Johnny Depp has played everything but a household pet that goes on an adventure to discover its true self.

But wait, now he's played just that in the animated Rango!

In fact, that's the official plot description! The chameleon is playing a chameleon!

We'll see if that makes his all-time best performance list (I have no idea, since I wasn't invited), but here are my six Depp delights so far:

(6) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He channeled Michael Jackson as the impishly devious kiddie host with a taste for sweets and sourness. He would have scored higher if it weren't for Gene Wilder.

(5) Alice in Wonderland. Considering the eyebrows -- and the possibilities -- he was actually pretty disciplined in his zany tea-party role. His mastery of the gapped teeth alone deserved an Oscar.

(4) Pirates of the Caribbean This time, he channeled Keith Richards as a swaggering drunk with the best dreads since Willow Smith. Angelina's probably wondering why this became a franchise and The Tourist didn't.

(3) Donnie Brasco. More serious and subdued than the usual Depp exercise, this invigorating crime drama proved Johnny can act, not just act up.

(2) Ed Wood. Playing the worst director in history, Johnny managed to be part of one of the best movies in history.

And my top slot goes to..

(1) Sweeney Todd. He slayed me! And he sings! Amazing! Johnny Depp makes weirdness fun again.

Johnny Depp is a talented actor! I watched all his movies. And recently, on http://www.torrentoff.com have downloaded Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Classy film. One of the best this year.

... and you left out what is hands down his greatest performance: his role as William Blake in Jim Jarmusch's "Dead Man".

Ed Wood- Still perplexed over no Oscar nomination. Sweeney ToddFear & Loathing In Las VegasBlow- I may be the only one who liked this movie. The film finally took advantage of the fact he still looked like a teenager in his mid-thirties.Charlie & The Chocolate Factory- The problem with the film is definitely not him (I hated Freddie Highmore as Charlie). Gene Wilder's Wonka still seemed to have an unresolved sinister side. I like Johnny's Wonka more.

Like somebody mentioned, his dual role cameo in Before Night Falls was excellent. Also loved him in Dead Man and Nightmare on Elm Street where his blood exploded out of his body after getting sucked into his own bed.

No Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas??? I thought his portrayal of Hunter Thompson was very inspired and so spot on.

He's usually good in whatever he's in but I don't like a lot of the movies he's in. Ed Wood is a wonderful film and his performance is great. I also liked him in Sleepy Hollow and I liked the art direction and cinematography, but the story is kind of bad.

Ed Wood!!! I don't like him in everything but I also thought his cameo in Before Night Falls was, uh, pretty amazing. I recommend the book "Nightmare of Ecstasty" by Rudolph Grey if you are a Wood fan. It's an "as-told-to" bio with many of the original characters still living, even Vampira (who is the coolest of 'em all...) took part in it.

I actually liked him in "Blow" with Penelope Cruz.

no scissorhands? for shame. It holds up beautifully.

Tremendously overrated, so is Tim Burton. Neither of their films hold up well. Don't like Johnny Depp, he's affected and obvious.

Agree re Ed Wood but my top slot would be Chocolat with a high score for Sleepy Hollow. I couldn't stand him in Chocolate Factory! Very annoying weirdo.
