Michael Alig a No-Show at Nightlife Panel

Last night, I moderated a really fun and informative panel about the history of New York nightlife at the Museum of Arts and Design.

On the panel were such formidable presences as Susanne Bartsch, Hattie Hathaway, Desi Monster, and Ladyfag, all ready to share their colorful stories of life after midnight to the crowd of cute looking clubbers.

But the scheduled Michael Alig -- still doing prison time for manslaughter -- never materialized on the video screen via remote, as planned.

As the event organizer explained, "Michael got in trouble with the Department of Correctional Services for something, and they cut off all his contact with the outside world until he has a hearing,"

Oy. Not exactly surprising, right?

Anyway, I started the panel by saying to the crowd, "So sorry that none of us up here have committed murder, but we'll work on that in the coming year.

"If you want your money back...you can't!"

Michael got caught with a joint in his locker and that's why he wasn't released. Michael won't be out until 2013 or later. He always finds a way to get into trouble. Michael will end up making good money for about 3 months after his release then he'll party then back in jail or an overdose will land him on Celebrity Rehab. After that he'll overdose. Michael will be dead in 2-3 years after his release. Musto won't have anything to write about then.

Michael is NOT coming back. nor will he ever. it all started with stormrave in dumbo well before Michaels time. I know cause i was there. and leave the poor kid alone who has a mental issue and who was so hyped up on drugs did not know what the hell he was doing.. at the time this all occurred. you should all go about your god dam merry way and live your lives accordingly. Grow up. and leave the queers, and gays and Queens alone. Face it they take up about 80% of the city now anyways.. so DEAL WITH IT.. if you don't like it GET OFF the EFFIN island.

i love some of these new york people who are still regurgitating this topic, over and over while more so, recognizing some don't recognize the social ills they've created through participation in a socio-cultural market delusion that is far worse than AIDS let alone murder. not an alig fan, but he certainly surprised musto over the years. nonetheless, it's a tired topic as the laramie project shows the hypocrisy of many gay people -- like those complaining about the vatican and pedophile priests while they'll showcase garbage of date rapists, pedophiles, domestic violence, and other assorted sordid molesters. for some, the urban bubble continues to show the sophisticated inertia in some circles of ultimately lazy people.

Sorry to tell Tiffany that Alig created a national club kid phenomenon--international, in fact--that was covered by Musto long before the murder.

Alig created nothing. He only copied what was done before him. He did nothing original and was a nasty and arrogant person. His only talent was self promotion and convincing other people who were desperate for attention to follow him.

Actually, Alig was extremely creative and helped re-energyize a nightclub scene in Manhattan for people of all ages and sexual orientations. At the time, Andy Warhol had died and AIDS was reaking havoc on a club scene that had lost personality and grown stale. Believe me, there was nothing stale in the late 80s and early 90s and if you were there, you had lots of fun, with or without drugs.

Why can't you get over that horendous murder & stop gloryfing a murderer ? I for one am sick of it as if there aren't great things happening now in nightlife or more important things in general life. And no i'm not whining or blasting, if you only stepped outside your box you could see just how annoying & rediculous the whole Michael Aleg story & person are. Get past it already ! Move forward, thank you.

The panel was three gays and two fag hags, so it was pretty limited in scope, but you brought in socioeconomic context in discussing the changes in nightlife.

I thought it was really lively and god. I liked the loose structure and you kept opening the house to questions, so any concerns could have been addressed.

this was not good. the title was misleading and it was poorly curated. there was only discussion of a small section of semi-underground gay club culture by 5 figures strongly stationed within this community. nothing discussing the many other facets of nyc nightlife, let alone its history. outside of you and ladyfag, the discussion was ill-prepared and not informative at all. big bummer.

OH go back to that studio headstone that you crawled out from under. Wha, Wha, Whaaaa. It was an interesting evening, if anything; and many enjoyed it.
