Who Should Star in Funny Girl?

babs.jpg

Funny Girl is the classic musical about entertainer Fanny Brice, a show that's never been revived on Broadway because Barbra Streisand was so indelible in the role, you'd have to be an absolute looney-tune to even go near it.

And the movie captures her performance for all time, a constant reminder of the perfect synthesis between star and material, the kind of chemistry that can't be replicated even by black magic.

But they're doing it again! As you know, very brave people have decided that a revival of Funny Girl is coming to Broadway next year.

And they've lined up a director (Bartlett Sher) and some other strong-willed folks ready to tackle this challenge. But guess what they haven't lined up? A star!

Lord knows they have to get someone who's a force of nature, especially since every note out of her mouth will be compared to La Babs.

I want someone extra brilliant so as not to add insult to injury to poor Barbra, who just had her Gypsy movie plan canceled.

So who should it be?

Lea Michele is the obvious choice, but she's busy with TV and besides, she's not right, I swear it.

The talented Idina Menzel might not be the right age, but she'd be my top choice out of all the known entities out there.

Of course, if an un-known entity comes around with the right pipes, chops, comic flair, charisma, and individuality, then give her the part -- and the Pulitzer Prize.

Leslie Kritzer Leslie Kritzer Leslie Kritzer LESLIE KRITZER LESLIE KRITZER- currently stepping into NEWSICAL.

She's the greatest star! She is by far!

About Leslie Kritzer's Fanny Brice in the 2001 Paper Mill Playhouse production review/New York Times:On stage... the young dynamo with Judy Garland's chops and Liza Minnelli's looks, right down to the dazzling, slightly off-center smile. Ms. Kritzer has an electric stage presence and is deliciously goofy, eliciting perfectly timed laughter with a pliable face that rivals Jim Carrey's. And her impressive vocal range, from a smooth low alto past high soprano, is rare at any age.

Watching her deftly handle the rigorous 13 songs, the dance numbers, the comedy and the dramatic character evolution that make up the two-plus-hour show, it's hard to believe that she hasn't been performing this role for decades, she so embodies it. What makes it all the more impressive is that few actors, or theater companies outside of summer stock, dare to attempt Jule Styne's and Bob Merrill's grand spectacle that propelled Barbra Streisand's career nearly 40 years ago...

Julia Murney. She did The Actors Fund Benefit Concert of Funny Girl a while back and has both the acting and vocal chops to more than pull it off!!

Uh, why not? I really don't get why people are so adamant in disliking her.

Stephanie J. Block's my vote too. She was wonderful in role when she did it in 2001.

Also wouldn't mind seeing Julia Murney, who KILLED IT when she did "People" a few years back. AMAZING rendition.

Do I have to state the obvious? Gwyneth Paltrow.

Leslie Kritzer (Catered Affair, Sondheim on Sondheim). Voice and comic chops to spare. If only she had more of a name.

It's not going to be good - the only way a revival of this would work is if it was being staged for a specific person who was suited to the role.

Oh did you say Box Office Draw ? My bad ! Then we'll have to go with Celine Dion without a doubt.

Hands Down Lady Gaga is perfect for this role ! She can sing & has the matching nose already.

Martha Plimptonshe's FUNNYshe sings wellshe's cute but not TOO pretty(like most of the girls being considered) and unique without being like Streisand

Now that Barbra isn't doing Gypsy, maybe she's available for the Funny Girl revival.

Yeah, and only she could give Julie Taymor a run for her money with possible production costs, and even more so in ticket prices. Oy.

I certainly hope they remove the song "Rat-a-Tat-Tat" that I sung when I did the show in dinner theater back in the 70s. And put "The Music that Makes Me Dance" back in that they replaced in the movie.

Can we not look for a star that everyone will compare to the original? Lea Michele has a nice voice but somehow seems to be just a Streisand knock-off. Idina Menzel...not sure....She screamed her way through Wicked.

And let's recall the show is the life of Fanny Brice (well, a somewhat fictionalized life of Fanny Brice) not Barbra Streisand.

And there certainly wasn't much of a book. I sound like a bitchy queen, and I am, but I also would look forward to seeing the show.

'The Music that Makes Me Dance' is a beautiful song. And that brought to mind why Barbra owns the role - because she could belt out 'Don't Rain on My Parade', but also sell a torch song or ballad or comic song.

I think the tide has turned against that Lea Michele dame. I keep hearing perfectly sane, rational folks suddenly launching into ranting screeds at the mere mention of her name. Not sure why that is. She sings well and she's pretty..seems to know how to act a bit. But there's just something underlying that is just not-so-likable about her. Can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's her nakedly ambitious "auditions" for the role at every turn?

YES YES YES....Omar Sharif Jr who is an actor and way better looking than Nicky Arnstein was....

What 400 times did Lea sing that song live? She sang it on Glee taped. Did she do some "Don't rain on my parade" tour that we haven't heard about?

Diana

She sang it on the Glee tour, and if the live videos are any indication, I think she'd be perfect for the part. She certainly has the voice and humor.

Well, she has been auditioning for this role for over two years now. That is reason enough not to give it to her. We're already tired of her.

Not sure why Lea wouldn't be right for the part. She can sing and she can do the comedic parts. She certainly has an understanding of the part as well and know what it takes to be on B-Way. Anyway, people just like to get on the bandwagon of saying what she shouldn't do. They should go with an unknown though if they do it at all.

Lea's "audition" during last year's Tony's broadcast was not the showstopper it was written to be. I think that's why the not Lea campaign.

The show has a [mostly] sublime score and a mediocre book [which is prob one of the reasons it lost the Tonys to Hello, Dolly! back in 1964].

This show should not be revived and I will not hold my breath for it to happen. If it does it is going to be as lackluster a revival as Promises, Promises.

How about Jason Gould, Barbra's gay son, or Steven Brinberg, Barbra's premier impersonator, as Fanny? and hunky Omar Sharif, Jr., [grandon of Omar] to play Nick?

How lucky can you get?
