Hedwig Star/Director Wants Your Five Bucks

John Cameron Mitchell is vastly known for Hedwig and the Angry Inch, not to mention directing Shortbus and the Oscar-nominated Rabbit Hole, plus co-hosting monthly Mattachine parties at Julius.

And now you'll get to know him as a beggar! The saucy imp wants your five smackers! Or even more than that!

But he has a solid artistic cause for it, and it has nothing to do with bailing Madonna out of her African woes.

Here's the email Mitchell just sent out:

"I try not to ask for much except to come to my parties, house-sit at my Puerto Rico shack, and be good to yourselves but...

"We've launched a Kickstarter appeal for The Ruined Cast, an animated feature I'm producing with Howard Gertler to be directed by rising star graphic novelist Dash Shaw ('Bottomless Bellybutton', 'Bodyworld', the comic art in 'Rabbit Hole').

"We're hoping to raise 25k for development (animatics, clerical, casting etc) so we can get to the next level of actual financing.

"It's a brilliant script, kind of a hybrid of Philip K. Dick and The Simpsons.

"Even a contribution of $5 gets you some art by Dash. More money gets you more. We only have 30 days to raise the money though!"

So please send your cash to him -- not to Spielberg, who'll only use it to get more servants.

Some people are under the assumption that an actor/artist/director, etc. who has name recognition must be rolling in the dough. That is simply not so. Unless that person is a Steven Spielberg, then he/she must hustle to find the necessary funds to finance a proposed project.

Is this the way it is done in L.A? OK, where's the address to send it to?

"Hedwig: That song was by a young mister Kurt Cobain - now that kid's got a future!" I love Hedwig and I've watched it for free and downloaded the songs so I probably owe him $5 anyway.

I LOVE this guy. I think he's brilliant. I love the fact he's asking for donations and offering people a chance to be a part of it. (I also love the Bruce Vilanch comment, ha.) I'm donating!

Dear Ms.Mitchell: As Bruce Vilanch said to Barbra when she complained that she didn't know how she'd afford Bruce's fee to write patter for her concert, "Sell a lamp."

Do you mean to say that Mr. Mitchell, with all those stellar credits, cannot find $25k of his own dough to get this thing off the ground? What gives?
