Joan Rivers And I Discuss AIDS Epidemic: Not For The PC

Categories: HIV

After last night's performance of the AIDS play The Normal Heart, people were shattered, as they are every night.

At the after-party, I saw my old friend Joan Rivers and asked her thoughts.

"I was very uplifted at the end!" she beamed.

Oh, no. She wasn't going to go there, was she? I love this woman.

"The doctor walked!" she explained. "It was a happy ending."

"Yeah, she walked to take her curtain call," I said. "Besides, she's the one with polio, not AIDS."

"You were so focused on the AIDS you couldn't see the happy ending!" insisted Joan.

We laughed through our tears. And Joan did have a point about the symbolic optimism.

"I guess I didn't see the happy ending of Anne Frank either," I remarked.

And then Joan got serious and told me how "staggering" this Normal Heart is.

Gee, that's so witty. I wonder why she's the queen of comedy and you're not.

Yeah, I wonder that myself. Might have something to do with joan being so hateful for most of her life, right before her husband had the sense to kill himself instead of putting up with more of her.

You're confusing Joan's comedy routine with her real personality. When Dave Letterman or Bill Maher or any number of other male comedians say the very same things, they're hilarious! But when Joan says them, she's a bitch! What a double standard!

Besides, as much as she makes fun of celebrities in her act (many of whom are her friends), Joan always makes fun of herself first and foremost. She hasn't stayed on top for the last four decades by being mean and hateful. She's a survivor and has a great work ethic and in her private life is VERY charitable who's been helping to fight AIDS since the early 80's, even when it was unpopular to do so and I couldn't respect her more for that..

Truly, dude, you're taking her far too seriously.

That's not all that un-PC. You should (and I'm sure HAVE) see her perform on W42nd. Even the earthquake-ravaged Haitians took some hits.

amazing to see another production that is supposedly for AIDS and so much more. it sounds more uplifting than a bunch of trolls in skirts pretending to be queer, yet, turning me off a tragedy that was historical, social, cultural, psychological and more, yet, reduced to the inadequacies of animated porn. a shame, but your intercourse with joan sounds poignant and entertaining as usual. staggering.
