Betty White Reveals Why Bea Arthur Hated Her!

Categories: Betty White

TheGoldenGirls-cast.jpg

We know full well how Bea Arthur felt about her Golden Girls co-star Betty White, partly thanks to all those years when Rue McClanahan ran around saying that Bea called Betty a C-word.

In Rue's book, there was also the darling little anecdote about how Bea was pissed when Betty was the first of that cast's ensemble to get nominated for the Best Actress Emmy.

But I guess Betty's been too busy working -- and living and triumphing -- to give her side of the story.

Until now.

At last night's TimesTalk, the 89-year-old supernova -- promoting her new book, If You Ask Me -- took a breath and said:

"Bea had a reserve.

"She was not that fond of me.

"She found me a pain in the neck sometimes.

"It was my positive attitude -- and that made Bea mad sometimes.

"Sometimes if I was happy, she'd be furious!"

Well, nowadays, Betty is so bursting-at-the-seams with success and happiness it would have driven poor Bea batty.

Oh, well, Bea's at peace now -- and so are Rue and Estelle Getty.

But hey, what about Estelle?

Well, said Betty, her big quirk was that she hated doing any scripts involving death.

"Death frightened her very much," confided Betty.

"It was almost a phobia!"

I bet Bea frightened her too!

(Kidding. I worshipped all four of these ladies, phobias and all. Damn, they were good.)

I loved these ladies, I always thought the commodary was just great acting. I truly thought  they acted great, I must of been so naïve    to not know they had personal problems behind the scenes, I can't believe that anyone would hate someone because they had a long and happy marriage. that's ridiculous.

I love those 4 girls and still watch them daily.  Bea has been one of my favorite actresses since All In The Family!

I have watched reruns of the GG and I always noticed how Dorothy treated Rose. To me it was more jealousy than anything. But, I always got the impression that Dorothy was hiding something about her and Blanche. Never cared for Bea Arthur in Maude or the GG. Didn't like her on All In The Family either. Betty White is a fabulous person and to still be acting at her age is remarkable. But, Betty White didn't have to publish a book to reveal that she and Bea Arthur were not BFF's. It is very obvious on the GG. It could be that Bea Arthur was jealous of Betty's marriage to Allen Ludden because it lasted so long. And who ever said that Betty White sent Allen Ludden to his grave is wrong. I don't want to live to be Betty White's age, but she is still remarkable for 92. Love you Betty White. Thanks for all the years of your entertainment.

In an interview with Rue shortly before.passing away... “Bea and I didn’t have a lot of relationship going on. Bea is a very, very eccentric woman. She wouldn’t go to lunch [with me] unless Betty [White] would go with her,” McClanahan said in the interview. “She was very dependent on keeping everything as it always had been, and I was anything but that.”

So either Betty lied, or Rue lied, or both had a warped sense of the truth.

betty white is a mean old nasty bitch. thats what drove allen ludden to his death. they have shown a few clips of betty while not filming and she just has a wicked demeanor. hope she croaks soon.

How clever of Betty White, to wait until Bea Arthur passed away to pass her off as the bitchy one.

from what Betty just did, Bea Arthur is right, Betty White is a cunt.

She's not that successful, people just respect her at her golden age.  We all respect older people and that's what it is. She's not as talented as most people think.

I wrote a good size note and did not post it right? I cannot type anymore, I will say this, I hope all those who had different points of view have calmed down (including myself) I do wish however that some would find the Lifetime Original Series (the Bio's) of many women ; not just the "Golden Girls" and watch them, they do give a true and good insight into each woman , I speak of the Golden Girls because they are the ones we were talking about. God Bless

Actually Bea didn't just "try" Broadway after Golden Girls. In fact she was a Broadway veteran with a Tony Award under her belt for the original Broadway production of Mame with Angela Lansbury in the 1960's. She was the original Vera Charles and won for Performance By an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical.

swk6 WOW! You serioulsy believe that Bea Arthur was jealous. And i've got a bridge for sale in Arizona. Beas was a class act FILM star while Betty was doing radio... Just saying. I could go on and on...but why?

Bea Arthur was SO JEALOUS of Betty White's popularity. That B*TCH would be rolling in her grave now over Betty's success!!!

If you remember Lifetime did a little feature on many women celebrity's, it was some years ago when they had several shows of there own and a much better lineup of movies (JMO) .... I have each one of the Golden Girls and I was pretty surprised at some of the things Bea Arthur said, I speak of her because 1) she did not want to do the Golden Girls, Rue managed to talk her into it , but Bea did say she loved Rue and Estelle however not a word about Betty. She also was very upset at the way her showbiz 'life' went, she wanted to sing, dance and be a 'STAR' , but she was told simply she did not have what it takes....to play the parts like Greta Garbo and  these lady's.I agree. She (it is said)  ruined her husbands career (a director) by insisting she play a part in a musical, she was young and went on but they laughed him out of the business. There is much much more and it is worth watching, but she was very unhappy doing what she was good at, and so many would have loved her life(the acting) after Golden Girls she tried Broadway and never got anywhere.Even as I watched her commenting on her life I thought to myself 'I like her but something is wrong' very odd.

Betty was the first to win not be nominated! They were all nominated 3 years in a row and then Emmy voters dropped rue and Bea but kept Betty and Estelle!!

Actually, if you pay attention to some of the episodes, you could clearly see that Bea was more interactive with Rue and Estelle. Her interactions with Betty always seemed rude and cold. I always figured there was something wrong between them, but now in 2013 I know. As sad as it is, I guess it's something I'll deal with. Not gonna stop me from watching the reruns, it's just distracting to unconsciously point out points between Betty and Bea. I love the golden girls. I grew up watching them with my grandma and now I watch it on the regular.

Interesting why  Bea Aurther didn't like Betty White! It was because Betty was the first cast's ensemble to get nominated for Best Actress Emmy.

I love Bea Arthur and that was Bea's personality you either loved her or hated her. She was a phenomenal actress. I absolutly love the Golden Girls this is my favorite show and always will be and I agree with other people it is a shame that someone decided to publish this because I like Betty White also and I see them in my head as friends and no matter what that's how I will see them. Also sometimes people just don't mix well with each other and it happens but i'm glad Bea and Betty kept it professional and worked through the Golden Girls as they did and to call Bea a "miserable bit and that she should die sooner than she did" is really a dumb and harsh thing to say Betty is still living and is really doing extrodinary work but Bea is no longer with us and to say something like that about someone dead you should be ashamed of yourself ! RIP Bea and keep on making us laugh Betty <3

I really makes sence but now sad because I will never watch Bea Arthur in the same light now.  Too bad she was such a miserable bitch, who needs people like that in their lives.  If it was so horrible for her she should have quit of died a lot sooner than she did.

Golden Girls is TV "comfort food." MAUDE is light years better. Just find it on YouTube or on the Antenna Network and see for yourself how brilliant were Bea, Bill Macy, and the others, including Rue.

I' sorry that Ms. White decided to speak about this. I think this is something personal between the two and should have been kept that way. As a long time GG fan I am disappointed that the press picked at this until they blemished the memory we all have of these 4 extraordinary women.

Rue McClanahan's bio, "My First Five Husbands..And the Ones Who Got Away" is kinda fun to skim through. She talks about how she got involved in begging the extremely reluctant Bea Arthur to consider doing "Golden Girls".

And regarding the truck-drivin' former Marine Staff Sargent Bernice Frankel, there is a wonderful web slideshow-tour of her remarkable Los Angeles home at 2000oldranch (dot) comwith interesting memorabilia on her office wall, and an amusing sign-post along a backyard path.

I haven't read the book yet, but in her interview last night, she did talk about having turned down SNL three times because she was afraid of the pace ("You do 45 sketches") and "the New York people" she'd be trying to keep pace with. But her agent said she had to do it, so finally she did.

I've been waiting for Betty White to mention what started this late-life career surge for her.

About three years ago, pre "Saturday Night Live," she played Susan Flannery's mother, a recurring character on the CBS soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful."

On her last weeks' appearances, she came to California to die -- but not in a hospital. Betty's character wanted to die in a particular spot on the beach she found beautiful. Daughters Flannery and Alley Mills (still on the soap) got in a tizzy, but Mama Betty's iron will triumphed. And so her character died on the beach, holding her daughters' hands. It was very touching.

B&B submitted that week of episodes to the Emmy Awards and for the first time won "Best daytime drama." She hasn't stopped working since.

Does she talk about it at all in the book?

I feel like I've seen White on TV all my life -- and I have! There is almost nothing she can't do, and do well.

@rider03  I hate to damn these women,I loved Bea and Rue in Maude. always loved betty in Mary Tyler Moore. I still can't believe, Bea would be jealous of Betty because of here marriage. Why don't we just appreciate that we got to see such great actresses in  our lifetimes. Maybe Bea felt like she deserved an award for all her good work. But, life doesn't always work out the way we want. A comment wasn't necessary, not the way it was said "if it was said at all" I just hate to have the last memories of these great gals have to be tainted, after all the laughter they brought us over the years.

@fan542 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aGt1RBrzUw this video shows Bea grabbing Betty White's hand during the show. Looks like Rue was accurate and I think Bea was jealous, which made her find a sort of comfort in Betty White. That may not make that much sense, but she may be jealous of Betty White's power and control, as she speaks in here about being out of control

tammyjj1972

@BettyIsACuntAfterall  Are you frikken kidding me?? Waited for Bea to pass away to pass her off as the bitchy one? From what I just read she didn't say anything mean. Basically that Bea was upset that Betty was a positive person. Rue said it as well if you read it again! "She's not that successful"? Wow, you really don't know much about Betty white do you? I suggest you do some research on her then come back! The woman is STILL working in a sitcom as well as her own show at the age of 92! Jealousy will get you no where. Wow what a lovely screen name you chose, if that's not pathetic.  :/

@kittyryan1984  Estelle Getty was my favourite since she got the funniest lines, then Bea Arthur, then Rue, Betty was my least fave mainly because she was playing a moron unfortunately

@GARDENIA  OMG I watch it so much people would think I was one of them! lol. Seriously though I totally loved that show and still watch it for hours on end because it's on a lot, and dif channels, as well as marathons, where I am. I would say if 2 actors (or more) can't get along in real life and can pull it off as well as these women then that makes them the best actress you can be! You would never have known that Bea didn't like Betty if not for celeb news! IDC what other's think, I love Betty White, always have always will. Loved every role she has played and love the "Hot in Cleveland" sitcom very, very much. If anyone of us can have a memory like that at the age of 92 then God bless us! She sure is wonderful!

HaHa, love that! I love Betty White. I also enjoyed Bea Arthur. I don't think she was "jealous" per say, she was just upset that Betty received an emmy nomination before her. No matter how you look at it they are ("were" in Beas case) great actresses and no one can deny that!

tammyjj1972
tammyjj1972

@swk6  If they couldn't get along in life, but could act like the best of friends then they were BOTH great actresses! Maybe you should take a cue from them and chilax! Grow up. Just sayin...

@tonip22  Well, I doubt very much she "waited" on purpose. whose to say she would out live Bea, my goodness get a grip on reality would ya. She also didn't say anything heart wrenchingly wrong! Betty White was and still IS my favorite Golden Girl and I love her new show as well as the newer sitcom "Hot in Cleveland" 92 years old and still going strong! That's one hell of a woman!

tammyjj1972

@Trent Rodeberg  So, I wonder if it was any other GG that won the BAE if that would make her dislike them as well. Bea didn't like her apparently from what Betty said because she was a positive, happy person. The BAE was just the cake topper! LOL.

Wow, you're seriously in need of some counseling! Who says such things about the demise of someone?? Even THEY were able to work day in and day out together and do their acting careers professionally, yet you as a watcher can't be nearly an iota of the word kind. Your candid words are horrible at best!

@Sharonpp I do not understand what u mean, Betty White has been hounded for years and so was the whole cast of the Golden Girls about this, NO ONE ever said a word they all played dumb NEVER did anyone say boo hoo Bea Arthur does not like me.Betty White got tired and finally said a few months ago that she really did not know why Bea did not like her, and that is all she has said, she still maintains there where no words between the two etc, she does not understand why , never did BUT did not let it bother her. For instance, Bea came to work and that was that she wanted to get it done and get out.Rue said , in a very nice way that she believed Betty and herself had more fun. I honestly have come to the conclusion that Bea did not like herself.

@Southern Dave  I think her comeback started with her obscenely rude appearance @ William Shatner's Comedy Central roast, e.g:  "Everybody knows Bill's nuts, but only Sulu's tasted them!"  She brought the room, & her career, back to life.  Check youtube for her interviews with the Archive of American Television, explains how she made her amazing career.

@Holland Reader LOL.... You really need to find Lifetimes hour long tributes in which a actress was picked out and sat and told 'her story'  ...each Golden Girl did one, and listen to what Bea Arthur says about her life, they stopped making them about the time Lifetime was still good to watch,  it might make a difference, Rue and Betty also the cast liked to take it easy and have fun with there roles, Bea just wanted to get it done and go home, I am not saying anything bad about her and it did seem as if they had fun but Bea should never have taken the job Elaine Stritch could have done it!
