Betty White Reveals Why Bea Arthur Hated Her!

TheGoldenGirls-cast.jpg

We know full well how Bea Arthur felt about her Golden Girls co-star Betty White, partly thanks to all those years when Rue McClanahan ran around saying that Bea called Betty a C-word.

In Rue's book, there was also the darling little anecdote about how Bea was pissed when Betty was the first of that cast's ensemble to get nominated for the Best Actress Emmy.

But I guess Betty's been too busy working -- and living and triumphing -- to give her side of the story.

Until now.

At last night's TimesTalk, the 89-year-old supernova -- promoting her new book, If You Ask Me -- took a breath and said:

"Bea had a reserve.

"She was not that fond of me.

"She found me a pain in the neck sometimes.

"It was my positive attitude -- and that made Bea mad sometimes.

"Sometimes if I was happy, she'd be furious!"

Well, nowadays, Betty is so bursting-at-the-seams with success and happiness it would have driven poor Bea batty.

Oh, well, Bea's at peace now -- and so are Rue and Estelle Getty.

But hey, what about Estelle?

Well, said Betty, her big quirk was that she hated doing any scripts involving death.

"Death frightened her very much," confided Betty.

"It was almost a phobia!"

I bet Bea frightened her too!

(Kidding. I worshipped all four of these ladies, phobias and all. Damn, they were good.)

If you remember Lifetime did a little feature on many women celebrity's, it was some years ago when they had several shows of there own and a much better lineup of movies (JMO) .... I have each one of the Golden Girls and I was pretty surprised at some of the things Bea Arthur said, I speak of her because 1) she did not want to do the Golden Girls, Rue managed to talk her into it , but Bea did say she loved Rue and Estelle however not a word about Betty. She also was very upset at the way her showbiz 'life' went, she wanted to sing, dance and be a 'STAR' , but she was told simply she did not have what it takes....to play the parts like Greta Garbo and  these lady's.I agree. She (it is said)  ruined her husbands career (a director) by insisting she play a part in a musical, she was young and went on but they laughed him out of the business. There is much much more and it is worth watching, but she was very unhappy doing what she was good at, and so many would have loved her life(the acting) after Golden Girls she tried Broadway and never got anywhere.Even as I watched her commenting on her life I thought to myself 'I like her but something is wrong' very odd.

I found this page trying to find out why betty white didn't move her head from side to side and had no neck. I was sure there must be a medical reason

Why wait until Bea passed before talking about it???? No one golden girl better than Bea Arthur. Betty White has always been my lease favorite.

Betty white was the first to win! They were all nominated like 4 years In a row!!

Betty was the first to win not be nominated! They were all nominated 3 years in a row and then Emmy voters dropped rue and Bea but kept Betty and Estelle!!

Actually, if you pay attention to some of the episodes, you could clearly see that Bea was more interactive with Rue and Estelle. Her interactions with Betty always seemed rude and cold. I always figured there was something wrong between them, but now in 2013 I know. As sad as it is, I guess it's something I'll deal with. Not gonna stop me from watching the reruns, it's just distracting to unconsciously point out points between Betty and Bea. I love the golden girls. I grew up watching them with my grandma and now I watch it on the regular.

Interesting why  Bea Aurther didn't like Betty White! It was because Betty was the first cast's ensemble to get nominated for Best Actress Emmy.

I love Bea Arthur and that was Bea's personality you either loved her or hated her. She was a phenomenal actress. I absolutly love the Golden Girls this is my favorite show and always will be and I agree with other people it is a shame that someone decided to publish this because I like Betty White also and I see them in my head as friends and no matter what that's how I will see them. Also sometimes people just don't mix well with each other and it happens but i'm glad Bea and Betty kept it professional and worked through the Golden Girls as they did and to call Bea a "miserable bit and that she should die sooner than she did" is really a dumb and harsh thing to say Betty is still living and is really doing extrodinary work but Bea is no longer with us and to say something like that about someone dead you should be ashamed of yourself ! RIP Bea and keep on making us laugh Betty <3

I really makes sence but now sad because I will never watch Bea Arthur in the same light now.  Too bad she was such a miserable bitch, who needs people like that in their lives.  If it was so horrible for her she should have quit of died a lot sooner than she did.

Golden Girls is TV "comfort food." MAUDE is light years better. Just find it on YouTube or on the Antenna Network and see for yourself how brilliant were Bea, Bill Macy, and the others, including Rue.

Nothing is better than Golden Girls. Nothing!

I' sorry that Ms. White decided to speak about this. I think this is something personal between the two and should have been kept that way. As a long time GG fan I am disappointed that the press picked at this until they blemished the memory we all have of these 4 extraordinary women.

@Sharonpp I do not understand what u mean, Betty White has been hounded for years and so was the whole cast of the Golden Girls about this, NO ONE ever said a word they all played dumb NEVER did anyone say boo hoo Bea Arthur does not like me.Betty White got tired and finally said a few months ago that she really did not know why Bea did not like her, and that is all she has said, she still maintains there where no words between the two etc, she does not understand why , never did BUT did not let it bother her. For instance, Bea came to work and that was that she wanted to get it done and get out.Rue said , in a very nice way that she believed Betty and herself had more fun. I honestly have come to the conclusion that Bea did not like herself.

It seems to me that Rue started it....

@Holland Reader LOL.... You really need to find Lifetimes hour long tributes in which a actress was picked out and sat and told 'her story'  ...each Golden Girl did one, and listen to what Bea Arthur says about her life, they stopped making them about the time Lifetime was still good to watch,  it might make a difference, Rue and Betty also the cast liked to take it easy and have fun with there roles, Bea just wanted to get it done and go home, I am not saying anything bad about her and it did seem as if they had fun but Bea should never have taken the job Elaine Stritch could have done it!

No problem, Sharon. Some of the best gals are cunts too.

Dorothy was being considered for Elaine Stritch until Elaine talked back at her big meeting.

Does Elaine ever think when she speaks or does she just flap her trap all willy-nilly?

Rue McClanahan's bio, "My First Five Husbands..And the Ones Who Got Away" is kinda fun to skim through. She talks about how she got involved in begging the extremely reluctant Bea Arthur to consider doing "Golden Girls".

And regarding the truck-drivin' former Marine Staff Sargent Bernice Frankel, there is a wonderful web slideshow-tour of her remarkable Los Angeles home at 2000oldranch (dot) comwith interesting memorabilia on her office wall, and an amusing sign-post along a backyard path.

I haven't read the book yet, but in her interview last night, she did talk about having turned down SNL three times because she was afraid of the pace ("You do 45 sketches") and "the New York people" she'd be trying to keep pace with. But her agent said she had to do it, so finally she did.

I've been waiting for Betty White to mention what started this late-life career surge for her.

About three years ago, pre "Saturday Night Live," she played Susan Flannery's mother, a recurring character on the CBS soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful."

On her last weeks' appearances, she came to California to die -- but not in a hospital. Betty's character wanted to die in a particular spot on the beach she found beautiful. Daughters Flannery and Alley Mills (still on the soap) got in a tizzy, but Mama Betty's iron will triumphed. And so her character died on the beach, holding her daughters' hands. It was very touching.

B&B submitted that week of episodes to the Emmy Awards and for the first time won "Best daytime drama." She hasn't stopped working since.

Does she talk about it at all in the book?

I feel like I've seen White on TV all my life -- and I have! There is almost nothing she can't do, and do well.

PS: Betty was originally slated to play Blanche, but that was deemed too similar to Sue An Nivens (her promiscuous character on The Mary Tyler Moore Show). So they switched things around and...magic!

Melinda9
Melinda9

Betty seems to me like one of those people who has steel beneath their charming exterior and makes the most of any character she's handed like Rose on Golden Girls, Sue Anne Nivens on MTM, etc. Bea Arthur got stuck with the Dorothy character on Golden Girls, the less flashy role, the sane person surrounded by loons. So maybe she took her rage out on BWhite. Or maybe she was just being funny when she made the cunt comment. (I laughed.) Or maybe Rue made it up. (Admittedly I know nothing about any of this, but that never stops me from guessing.)

Yes, Rue had already been telling that story in public. It was quite a shocker. How at Bea's Broadway opening night, Rue's husband went up to Bea and said "Thanks for inviting us."

"Oh, I love Rue," replied Bea. "It's Betty who's the cunt!"

tony adams

In Sept. 2009, Rue told that c-word story on stage when it was her turn at the mic during the memorial service for Bea. That was the first time I heard it. It brought the house down, and served as the perfect counterpoint to the sweeter tone set by Angela Lansbury at the opening of the service.

the best writing in the hirstory of american television if you ask me and the greatest ensemble cast..i discovered Golden Girls late..2007 so I have had a lot of pleasure watching the years and years of these shows....

Not pathetic at all.  I know all the lines as well and still laugh at every rerun or when I watch my dvds.

Betty White is such a class act. She stayed above all this shit all these years and now weights in with a no-doubt watered down version of what happened. She's nice enough not to say "It's Beatrice Arthur who was the CUNT!"

@Midgette Bea was heads above Betty who was rather irritating. Class act???? Betty White???? Guess you don't pay attention

janepane21
janepane21

@tonip22 I love the Golden Girls but this is really not that important to me , I do not know either one of these people and I cannot respond accurately, if they lied during interviews? what am I to do? All I said is I believe Bea Arthur was unhappy with her life , and I did not hear White say anything nasty about Bea, dead or alive, and really, like no one speaks of the passed in anything but good ways? kinda silly and untrue.

tonip22

a class act wouldn't bash a deceased person. And I have to say, it was classless of BOTH to use that word

tonip22
tonip22

@janepane21 @tonip22 Actually, no. I haven't seen any dvd's with Rue talking about herself, just years of observing. And to say Betty was or is classy in any way is really far fetched. She's been crude as long as far as I've seen (and that's my entire life).
