Cary Grant Wasn't Gay, Says His Daughter

In her new book, Good Stuff, Jennifer Grant says dad Cary Grant was about as gay as Cole Porter. (I mean the Cole Porter he played in Night and Day).

"Of course, Dad somewhat enjoyed being called gay," she adds. "He said it made women want to prove the assertion wrong.

"When asked if Dad was gay, Betsy Drake had the best answer: 'I don't know, we were always too busy fucking for me to ask.'

"The gay rumor normally seemed funny to Dad," continues Jennifer, except when he sued Chevy Chase for slander, of course.

"Perhaps Dad had what Virginia Woolf described as 'an androgynous mind,'" she concludes.

But did Dad ever experiment sexually? wonders Jennifer, aloud.

"I don't know. Have I ever experimented sexually? Have you? If experimentation makes one gay, then my guess is that most of the world is gay."

Or bisexual. In fact, I just found the rest of Betsy Drake's quote, and it is:

"Maybe he was bisexual. He lived 43 years before he met me. I don't know what he did."

My wife, a registered nurse at the time cared for Cary Grant who she confirmed wore ladies silk panties.

A man who said he had nursed Randolph Scott during his last illness told me that Scott and even Mrs. Scott talked quite casually and openly about Cary being the love of Randolph's life, and about Cary dropping him almost killing Scott. I tell the tale that I heard told.

Gay or Straight...Cary Grant was fabulous. ...although, in his interview with Boze Hadleigh in the book (1996...I think) "Hollywood Gays" he is "bisexual."

It's hard enough for children to believe their own parents had sex let alone a sex life with other people.

I think she looks like him.

"Cary Grant Wasn't Gay, Says His Daughter" -- Sure, and she wasn't his daughter....

Women are so totally, blindly, and hilariously clueless when it comes to men's private sex lives...

Until tracking down all the Cary/Randy "domestic" shots, I really was somewhat undecided as to whether this dream pairing could have actually been a "couple".  But seeing these shots of the two of them, staring dreamily into each others' eyes--and most especially, the silhouette shot of Randy lighting Cary's cigarette--it became clear to me that their way of keeping the secret was to "hide in plain sight"--to make it seem so obvious that most wags at the time would assume they couldn't possibly be "doing it" if they were on such blatant display.  Smart move, boys!  Worked so well that even 75 years later, the mystery lingers on...and we're STILL talking about it!

Maybe Cary didn't tell everyone, especially his daughter all the truth.  In context, until the 1970s, being gay meant you were mentally ill (so said the American Medical Assoc.).  Even now there is horrendous stigma.  Added to that, a leading man (then AND NOW) can't say he's gay if he values his career.  Jennifer was right when she said her dad was about as gay as Cole Porter (the real one).  If Cary could have done just as he pleased, he and Randolph would no doubt have rode off into the sunset together.  Though he walked the tightrope about who he actually was, it was the circumstances.  He is in a lot of ways...MY IDOL!

My dad told me he experimented with other guys up till his teens.  But by the time he was 21, he was married and starting a family and screwing all the women in the neighborhood.  He wasn't shacking up with a bachelor at a pristine seaside palace, sipping tea from bone china and trying to one-up each other in the "rich wife" department like Randy and Cary.  The Malibu photos with Scott (in the pool, training the dog, etc.), depict what looks like the most romantic time Cary ever had in his life.

I wanted to ask Betsy Drake the same question, but she and I were too busy fucking for me to ask.

Here's how Jennifer's section starts:

"What does one say when asked if one's famously charming, debonair, five-times-married, crooned-over father is gay?

"Hmmm...a grin escapes me.

"Can't blame men for wanting him, and wouldn't be surprised if Dad even mildly flirted back.

"If so, it manifested as witty repartee as opposed to a pat on the ass.

"That's a sign of healthy, secure sexuality."

Isn't it pretty to think so?

Yes, it's not likely he would've discussed it with her, if only because children recoil from that kind of oversharing from their parents.

Exactly, Cary and Randy look like a very happy couple in all those many photos that Gregorama has shared. It doesn't seem like any of his marriages to women were happy like that - but as far as fucking people, he must have been ambisexual.
