Katy Perry Demands That Her Drivers Don't Talk To Her!

The first line of my current column about why I hate celebs is "They claw their way to the top, then act like they're desperate not to be noticed."

Well, I've been vindicated once again because real-life examples are popping up like deranged hedgehogs!

Our friends at thesmokinggun.com just got ahold of Katy Perry's contract riders for touring, and honey, she's a firework!

Among the provisos is that her drivers can't talk to her or her guests, they're barred from daring to look at her via the rearview mirror, and they absolutely cannot request autographs or photos, especially while driving!

Sounds like the bouncy pop icon is doing her own driving -- i.e., driving underlings crazy!

Please. I was once supposed to do a phone interview with Maya Angelou. I got a special call in advance of it, notifying me that I must call her Dr. Angelou at all time. And then she never even called!

Celebs are maddening at times. I think a driver should be allowed to say "Wanna take the bridge or the tunnel?" And if they initiate a conversation and you don't feel like engaging, you can always say "I'm just going to rest here right now." But to forbid them from even uttering a word seems absurd.

I completely agree with her.

The only possible conversation should be on which way to go and would I like the radio on. I have had drivers ask me the worst questions. One wanted to know my religion and informed me if you're not born again you're going to hell, then he started to sing All G-d's Children Love Jesus as we drove to JFK Airport . . . and that's just one out of many I could write.

Oh, and while we're on this topic. Diana Ross is correct when she wants her employees to call her Miss Ross. It is a sign of respect. Maya Angelou is known for telling people who stop her on the street and call her Maya, "Call me Miss Angelou."

She could have easily said Dr. Angelou but "Miss" suffices as a term of respect.

When my parents were in public school in New York, all their teachers called them Mr. or Miss and their last name.

Contract Riders seem ridiculous but they allow a performer to have some control over their environment from city to city.  A sense of normalcy allows them to relax and probably to give a more consistent performance.  The rider creates challenging work for the organizers but having a similar environment and similar food is helpful and has a payoff for the concert goer.  The time in the limo may be the only downtime available in a 16-20 hour day.  Why talk with the driver?

Could this be because maybe Russell doesn't want her talking to any other man?

she has to save her voice for her concerts and live interviews.

We've worked with Katy Perry and she is smart, friendly, down-to-earth and a real trooper. As opposed to Lady Gaga who is a spoiled brat, an egomaniac and an asshole. I'm just sayin....

"I would have told Ms. Perry the engine was on fire, but I wasn't allowed to look at her in the rear view mirror.  My condolences to Mr. Brand."
