Streisand's Gypsy: Still On, Despite Laurents' Passing

• What ever Barbra does will be great,She will do an incredible job with the music. I just wish, and have for years, That she would play Nora Demond in a film version of Sunset Boulevard she would be superb! she has the voice to do it better then anyone and no controversy as the role is certainly age appropriate

• First off it will be very expensive, and have a rather limited audience,just think how many of todays movie goers even know who Gypsy was I recently saw the version with Bette Mider, which was good,but not great This was done a few years back, and at that time, Bette was too old to play the role of the mother of young children So having a 70 year old play the part will take more than just great acting 

• So, it's not just anybody who stays home that's dead. This is troubling.

• She want the Mama Rose role not Gypsy Rose Lee part. Get serious she's 69. The point is she started with a Jules Styne Musical (Funny Girl) and wants to come full circle with Gypsy music by Jules Styne.

• Stephen Sondheim is still against it. He does have some say in this.

• Twenty years ago I could see it. Streisand is one of the great talents of our time but this role, at her age, will be a major disappointment. The long nails, the soft focus required (see also Yentl), the audio enhancements that will be necessary--why turn this into another Mame?

• I dont see Babs surpassing Rosalind Russell..pretty hard to beat her...Roz did it very non jewish...i dont think Babs see's it that way...we dont want a Mama Rose like a Fockers Babs...no thanks.

• Please, he didn't "pass." He died. Gas is what gets passed. Hmmmm, I think I see what you meant ......

• Barbra got her big break on Broadway through Arthur Laurents and he wrote one of her most successful roles in the movies. She tweeted her respects for his great life.

• OK I did a little research and she was supposed to play a young woman. And she WASN'T a young woman. Same problem with Gypsy.

• Well at least it will keep her away from "The Normal Heart." Barbra has the anger and ambition of Rose in her DNA. But she's never truly unleashed it on stage or screen. Now for the REALLY important question: Who's going to play Tulsa?

• Big mistake for Barbra, whom I love. She is too old to play Mama Rose. There is no audience for this, by the way. It will bomb. She might get a night visit from the ghost of Lucille Ball.

• Uh wrong....she was not supposed to be a teen in Yentl. Clown. Do a little research

• Um, yes, trying to play a teen cross dresser in Yentl--she was VERY miscast.

• So she was miscast in The Way We Were? Funny Lady? What's Up Doc? On A Clear Day? Yentl? Nice try.

• Maybe she's too old for the role, but I'd love to see her in a musical again.

• Jane Fonda has one of those, too.

• Uh, she prefers Coton de Tulears, not Lhasa Apsos.

• Barbra will be swell! She'll be great! Tons of her fans will be elated. To the non-believers? Go do something with YOUR lives. Barbra has done wonders with her's!

• She looks great for her age, is kinda-sorta "ageless" in a way, and I feel certain they'll use digital effects on the scenes when she's supposed to be more like 40.

• It will be peculiar indeed watching Streisand, age 69, playing Mama to 12-year olds. But with lighting, make-up, perhaps a little vaseline smeared on the lens, I think it will work. Babs has lost a bit of her upper register and a bit of her power, but she'll more than handle the score. This could really be fabulous. Ethel Merman must be spinning in her grave that the "new belter" (see Judy Garland show) is doing her show. At the risk of starting a comments war, anything to remove the stench of the dreadful Patti Lupone from this show is a good thing. Had to say it....

• Cannot wait, should be FANTASTIC...I could care less whether she was 9 or 90....Streisand singing GYPSY!!!! Come on!!!! Nothing's better...

• I didn't know Mama Rose's mother was a character in the show.

• Or maybe Baby June.

• I have a feeling Streisand wants to play the part of Gypsy Rose Lee (since she's always been miscast in every one of her movies except "Funny Girl"), and let some other warhorse play Mama Rose. After all, you gotta have a gimmick!

• This is good news for a small but very interested group of people.

• I wonder what Barbra's reaction was: "It's still on, right?"
