Interactive Mommie Dearest Was A Scream

Mommie Dearest is the unwitting 1981 comedy about celebrity child abuse, but it was funnier than ever at last night's interactive version of the camp classic at the Ziegfeld.

The event ballsily started with go-go boys running down the aisles with empty popcorn buckets that the audience was asked to fill with tips for drag host Hedda Lettuce -- something even Faye Dunaway would never have the cojones to do!

But then Hedda came out and was funny enough to earn the bucks.

She humorously told us, "Faye was on a soupçon of crystal meth when she made this film.

"She was the last one to be in on the joke!

"The director hated her and didn't tell her a thing, and the editor hated her, too -- some of the shots he lingered on, her eyes are crossing."

She advised us to notice Faye's "Kabuki drag" and to notice how her eyes get more Asian as the film progresses.

Hedda then had the audience chant "Don't fuck with me, fellas!" instructing us that when Joan shrieked that to the Pepsi board, "she had not a drop left of estrogen in her body and her bones creaked when she chewed, but she was not gonna put up with it!"

She also instructed us to hiss whenever Tina appeared and to "shoot heroin in the last half-hour. It gets so fuckin' dull!"

But the night's only sad moment came when I heard a gay in front of me tell his friend, "This movie is basically my childhood!"

Holy s--t.

Faye's "Columbo" WAS a gem!

For the first half hour, you thought that Faye and a younger actress were lovers.

Then you found out that they were mother and daughter who killed a gigolo who had fucked them both over..

Columbo fell half-way in love with Faye  and let the daughter go when Faye gave herself up!

It was sophisticated, VERY neatly plotted and this sentimental sap grinned at how good it was and cried at the same time.

We're watching "Columbos" this weekend. My other favorite: The one with Ruth Gordon who locks a guy in a safe and Mariette Hartley as her secretary who catches on.

And of course all the ones with Jack Cassidy. (I think there were at least three.)

Faye must be upset that Peter Falk has died. She always talked about "that gem of a Columbo" she was on.

In New Orleans right now, the group Running with Scissors is doing "Mildred Dearest," a surreal mirror maze mash-up of a La Crawford's life and movies and how one reflected the other. Or was it the other way 'round? Anyway, it's Too, Too Fabu!

Gays attending an interactive presentation of "Mommie Dearest" is comparable to hippie fans attending a Grateful Dead show: Both groups already know they love the show before they've even seen it.

That gay who said the movie was his childhood, probably meant he spent his it watching the movie over and over, wishing his dull American Gothic parents were more Hollywood.

I hope so. That's better than having a screaming harridan for a mother.

Ordinary People portrayed my childhood (I know I'm not the only one).  I told my mother to go see Mary Tyler Moore's performance.  She didn't speak to me for three months.  And then only to say, "I'm NOTHING like that."

But ya were Blanche, but ya were...

I, too, enjoyed last evening's screening (screaming?) of 'Mommie Dearest.'  It was great to see it shown on the big screen again after 30 years.  Haven't laughed so hard in a movie theatre in a very long time.  Hedda Lettuce was truly hysterical with her ongoing commentary.  She pointed out a number of very funny moments I had missed even after seeing the movie many times.

My only disappointment was that Hedda didn't know (and dismissed) the name of ctor Howard Da Silva when his name came up in the opening credits.  Da Silva portrayed L.B. Mayer in the movie.  Da Silva had a long and successful career on stage and in the movies.  One of my favourites was his portrayal of the photographer Angelo Dokakis in 'Garbo Talks.'

Otherwise, a very enjoyable evening!

Originating the role on stage and appearing in the movie!  He was brilliant.

somewhere in heaven Joan Crawford is laughing her ass off at 1) this and 2)how ridiculous this movie made her look. right before she died, she threatened sue Christina over the book (which is mostly if not all innaccurate).

I interviewed Faye years ago at an AMC revival of "Chinatown." She was fab and avoided biting any baits I put out for her. I asked her about her widely publicized feud with Polanski on the set and she wouldn't go there. I also asked what was taking so long with her Master Class movie. She responded that it wasn't taking long at all! But it had been ages, and that was YEARS ago. I hope she's finally finished it and it will be released.

I did my 10th grade book report on Mommie Dearest. It was before the movie came out. I even made a mock up poster advertising the book. It was a fun project. The following year my book report was titled The Causes and Effects of Mental Depression. LOL.

Last week, Mommie Dearest and Mahogany were on TV at the same time! It was a gay Sophie's Choice.

It was my childhood too, with just a dash of Now Voyager.

YOU were a scream on Real Housewives last night. Loved it!

PS: Hedda's only misstep came during the opening credits, when Mara Hobel's name was flashed. Hedda applauded and said, "That's Carol Ann, I think." But Mara played little Tina. (Hiss. Hiss.) Carol Ann was played by Rutanya Alda.
