Tony Awards Prove My Blind Items Right!

The Tonys aren't for gays anymore?

Yes, they are, ha ha!

This very week, my column has a blind item about an actor/director who broke up with a Wicked chorus boy, only to take up with the Pal Joey star.

I also said that the Pal Joey guy broke up with an ex Chicago cast member, who's now dating that Book of Mormon star.

Well, at the Tonys tonight, there was ...

Joe Mantello sitting with Matthew Risch.

And Denis Jones sitting with Andrew Rannells.

Nyah.

It was thrilling to see Larry Kramer up there. But in his speech, he said "We are a very special people, an exceptional people."

Isn't the play called The NORMAL Heart? Aren't we fighting for equality, not some exalted status?

Also, back then, AIDS also affected IV drug users and others, and now it's across the boards worldwide. I think that should be made clear to the public, rather than gay-AIDS and vice versa.

But again, I was thrilled.

Good for all three of them for making a statement, I guess.

I'll be writing about the Tonys in this Wednesday's column. But what did everyone think of:

Frances McDormand's denim jacket?

Mark Rylance's joke speech?

Brooke Shields' messups?

From the opening musical number to the closing credits re-cap the show was the best single awards show I've ever seen...and I've been watching them for 50+ years...with all the talent, intelligence, sincerity, total professionalism and energy on display there wasn't a dull moment...and,since I don't live in NYC,most of the plays and players were unknown to me but they all made me want to see the shows...why don't the Oscars just hire the producers, writers and Neil Patrick Harris and put on a telecast like the one we saw last night?

This reminds me of the question I've wondered about. How is it that 75% of Broadway's leading men are gay and 0% of Hollywood's are. It's a puzzlement.

I just checked goldderby, Musto, and you actually got 22 out of 26 right, which is even better.

I got 22 right, Nyah.

Broadway...it's not just for gays anymore! But it helps!

Right. Except they're in hit shows that won awards tonight and were televised doing so and will get lots of press for it.

I guess Michael Riedel was too busy sniffing theater seats for stories.

Does this mean that Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock is gay?  Please say it is so!

... with Time Out New York's predictions coming out on top of all of the Gold Derby folks, with 25 out 26 correct. Did any pundit get all 26?

Frances McDormand is crazy, but it's the good, artsy, self-deprecating Earth Mother kind of crazy. Plus she's got the tough half of the EGOT over with. She can wear Lady Gaga's Bounce sheets for all I care.

I like Mark Rylance's earlier work, when he was Kevin Kline.

Brooke's Shield is impenetrable. Plus she has the I've-Been-Bashed-By-Tom-Cruise sympathy crowd. She could do the Aristocrats joke at the Kennedy Center Honors and survive. She's like Cher, only not quite.

where was Lena Horne and Clarice Taylor in the In Memoriam montage? big fuck-up by the producers, I say...

Brooke Shields' went onstage to explain why she messed up (called at last minute) and then messed up her explanation as to why she messed up.  But it was the best Tonys I have ever seen.  NPH rules.

At this junction in time, I'm still trying to make sense of heavy set yet capable of flight BUMBLE BEES and somehow running into brick, wood, plaster walls.

@Scott Just look at which movies have won the last three MTV Movie Awards (Popularity Contest) for best movie of the year. That is who Hollywood gears their content towards!

You're right, knock it off with the "We are a very special people, an exceptional people." crap.  Too many are fabulous in their own minds - regular hard-working people who actually produce families aren't impressed.

Not that I know of.

Um, gay people produce families too.
