Tracy Morgan's Homophobic Comedy Rant

Categories: TV

I like a good joke as well as anyone, but 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan swerved past humor and into the realm of senseless pandering with his stand-up act, as an observer notes on Facebook.

Says the guy (who saw Tracy perform in Nashville):

"He said that there is no way a woman could love and have sexual desire for another women, that's just a woman pretending because she hates a fucking man.

"He informed us that the gays needed to quit being pussies and not be whining about something as insignificant as bullying.

"... and that bullied kids should just bust some ass and beat those other little fuckers that bully them, not whine about it.

"He said if his son was gay, he better come home and talk to him like a man and not [he mimicked a gay, high pitched voice] or he would pull out a knife and stab that little N word to death."

Oh, Tracy! Talk about a wuss!

Maybe you should go back into your Star Jones drag and learn more sensitivity.

I am not a fan of Tracy Morgan, never thought he was funny, but on this matter, I agree with him. I think ANYONE who is being bullied should stand up for themselves. I do not think we should create or foster a culture of whining. If someone commits suicide, it is their own fault. I do not condone bullying, nor do I think we should be insensitive to kids who are being bullied, but all kids face it at some point, for some reason. Gay kids should not be treated like they are special because of it. They should stand up for themselves. They should be empowered to do so. They should have the gumption to come home and say that something bad is happening to them and they need help stopping it. And more importantly, they should get that help when they need it. The problem with bullying is that there seems to be no one willing to protect these kids. We just want to let them cry and kill themselves. I know people think they are doing something honorable by letting gay kids cry all over themselves, but they really are perpetuating a pussy ass environment for gay kids to be weakened and victimized. It is not homophobic to say that that in itself is harmful and sickening.

That is PATHETIC and UGLY!  ...and this after I'd learned to tolerate him, again, after all those poor SNL skits.

Tracy Morgan used his hate in the guise of comedy to make money. Pure and Simple. He was paid to say this in front of an audience. So stop the hate by stopping his cash flow. Write the 30 rock sponsors. Tell them you are gay and still have disposable income that THEY won't be getting because you are not going to buy their products. That will get his ass off the show. Then he can cry discrimination in every night club in the South and Midwest while he entertains the Tea Baggers to scrape out a living. There is nothing funny about one person (especially a parent) saying they will murder another person (his son) simply because they acted fey. How many people repeated this joke in Nashville before the news broadcast it? How many accepted it and said yes they would surely kill their own child if they came out to them? How many children heard their family repeat this? How many of them are gay? How many of them thought it was funny?

The difference between Lampanelli and Morgan telling jokes about race and sex orientation?  Lampanelli's funny.  I laugh at lots of gay jokes.  But this was an unfunny rant designed to give him street cred with the thuglies out there.  Most comics spend years honing five minutes straining some funny stuff out of their miserable lives by trying it out on friends, other comics, etc.  Tracy doesn't need to do that.  He's already a star on a TV show.  Maybe he should.

We have outrage over the comments of another comedian.  This time it's Tracy Morgan and his unsavory comments about gays.

Well you know what Mr. Morgan, don't you dare go and apologize to the gay and lesbian community for doing what you do.  You are a comedian and you are not responsible for the things you say.  After all, it is what we expect from comedians today, right?

There are countless times a comedian used off-color humor and offended someone.  Whatever group that is offended in turn demands an apology and then the comedian issues a heartfelt apology.

There is always an exception.  What is the exception you ask?  The exception is when the off-color humor is pointed at God.  Forget the fact that He created the universe and all that is in it.  Forget that He is more important than any man, woman, or creature on this earth.

No matter how offended the Christian community was at the "humorous" antics of Kathy Griffin and her insults launched at God during an awards acceptance speech; no apology was offered.  It was said overwhelmingly on morning shows across America, "that's just what comedians do".

Outstanding!  Mr. Morgan, make sure you remind these morning shows who are outraged and calling for your execution that, "this is just what comedians do".

No one's beating fundie talibangelicals in the street, threatening to stab their own kids if the kids turn out fundie, or barring "religious" freeeks from marrying, adopting, serving openly.

Also, Kathy Griffin's routine had a point: The sanctimony of all the people, who I'll bet go to church less often than I do, thanking Jesus in public for something that is ultimately so trivial, an award.

Morgan's routine had no discernible joke to it that I could see. For example, "If my kid turned out gay I'd strangle him with my feather boa." That is in another realm from what Morgan did, which was just about hate.

Having said all that, I enjoy when fundierai$ing cretins feel they must play the victim card. That means, "It IS Getting Better."

Oh, I left out the obvious point of my reply: Bigot, pogrom seeking, mouth breathing, anti raitional evilgelicals deserve whatever they get in the way of invective, and deserve a lot more of it.

Forgive me my oversight.

You know these comedians...they say the darnedest things. When it works- they are edgy. When it doesn't usually the uproar is proportionate to the bomb. Something I've noticed in my years, clever humorous things are funny and the malicious humor that denigrates races and is overly sexist (including GLT) usually backfires.I think this was more of a guy that is starting to get more mass media face time finding out there are limits with how much your celebrity is really worth. He seems to be a smart fellow- hope he got the message...

Melinda9
Melinda9

He doesn't seem super-smart - maybe he forgot that he was there to be funny and decided to share his wisdom on handling bullies. And then he had a little side trip to Crazytown about stabbing his gay son to death. But don't worry - the only gay person he has a problem with is his hypothetical? gay son.

Pac
Pac

For him to say "Stop whining and fight back" isn't quite right, since most of the kids being bullied are defenseless and would lose in a physical fight. And fighting violence with violence is dumb. Besides, gays aren't "whining" about the bullying--they're saying make it stop.

Millions of gay men who watched 30 Rock have totally deleted their sexual fantasies of performing oral sex on Tracy Morgan. Even if Morgan had just finished playing an athletic game for the past 90 minutes, there is simply no way would any decent gay men go down on him after his recent comments.  My imageof  Tracy's cock stuck in a bathroom glory hole seems like a distant memory now. Even questionable rimming  fantasies of Tracy are no long in my mental fetish file cabinet. Gone forever

JJust based on the content presented in this blurb, I think people are missing the point he's trying to make. It's about not whining.

IF his son were gay he wants him to address it like a man.

I never thought Tracy Morgan Stand up was that funny , but don't get the bit twisted.

Melinda9

I didn't see the bit obviously, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'address it like a man'. The son would not only owe TMorgan some kind of 'explanation' but he has to do the explaining in a butch voice?

Here is Tina Fey's response to Tracy's foolishness:

"I'm glad to hear that Tracy apologized for his comments. Stand-up comics may have the right to 'work out' their material in its ugliest and rawest form in front of an audience, but the violent imagery of Tracy's rant was disturbing to me at a time when homophobic hate crimes continue to be a life-threatening issue for the GLBT Community.""It also doesn't line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person. I hope for his sake that Tracy's apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian coworkers at '30 Rock', without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket. The other producers and I pride ourselves on '30 Rock' being a diverse, safe, and fair workplace."

Mikeyjoey

There's an awful lot of hateful comments being posted by people who perceived Tracy Morgans comedy to be 'hate speech'.  You can't be upset over 'hate speech' then turn around and use it yourself.  The answer to hate is not more hate. He admits it was poor judgement and poor comedy and apologized...(our side wins...it's over).  How about putting our energy toward groups like Focus on the Family, NOM, major religions and all the others out there who are actively and deliberately trying to pass laws against us?

Have you guys ever heard of Shirley Q Liquor? Unless you all get up in arms about that it think people should get off there high horse. Comedy is OFTEN offensive. Ever see a Charlie Kaufman stand up routine? Tracy Morgans brand of comedy has ALWAYS been to be as out there and Fucked as possible. Looks like he succeeded at that. I would be very angry also if i heard Tracy say that in an interview or saw Shirley Q Liquor (a white gay man who's entire act is being the most ridiculous black straight female stereotype ever) doing his act in front of the NAACP but in the context of a COMEDY act all is fair game as far as i am concerned

rolph
rolph

Shirley has been protested a lot by the gay community. And at least Shirley's act is an affectionate portrayal of an actual person, not anything advocating violence against people.

Clifton Brown Jr

I don't think Shirley should be protested either and one mans "Affectionate portrayal" is another's racist caricature (Who is my baby daddy?). Also i don't understand your point are you saying Tracy's material would be appropriate if he were perhaps Mincing around the stage acting like an overly effeminate gay stereotype as long as he said he was doing a portrayal of say a family member? Kathy Griffin whom i love says HORRIBLE things about specific people but they don't get mad because SHE IS A COMEDIAN and they can take a joke (well the ones that don't take themselves to seriously anyway).

A day later Chris Rock amended this tweet, taking exception to Morgan's comments...saying he initially hadn't understood the whole routine.

Not to fool ourselves, Rock/Morgan would be shitting in their pants if some white comedian made jokes about slavery, or used the N word.  Jackson/Sharpton would be on every channel trying to have THAT person waterboarded.  People have got to stop being  frightened to call these people out on their shit, cause that is what it is....a big pile of steaming shit.

White comedians have done it Lenny Bruce, Dice Clay,Sam Kenison. Lisa Lampinelli etc. I could fill this box,

I saw Chris Rock on an HBO talking-heads-type show Talking Funny with Jerry Seinfeld, Louis CK and Ricky Gervais. And Chris Rock and Louis CK subscribe to the 'no topic is off limits' school of comedy - so I'm guessing he wouldn't say anything if a white comedian made jokes about slavery.

 TRACY MORGAN's apology:

"Iwant to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my

choiceof words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville," Morgan said in

thewritten statement. "I'm not a hateful person and don't condone any

kindof violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester,

and myfriends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this

clearlywent too far and was not funny in any context."

NBC CHAIRMANROBERT GREENBLATT: "I speak for NBC and myself

personallywhen I say we do not condone hate or violence of any kind and I ampleased to see Tracy Morgan apologizing for recent homophobic remarks in hisstandup appearance.  We will alwaysrecognize an artist's freedom toexpress him or herself, but not when reckless things are said no matter whatthe context.  Unfortunately,Tracy's comments reflect negatively on both"30 Rock" and NBC - two very all-inclusive and diverse organizations--andwe have made it clear to him that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated."

Mikeyjoey

There's nothing wrong with edgy humor, it's all about the intent, and I imagine this was meant to be funny.  Sometimes it bombs. I just think that you can't judge this out of context.  If you wrote down 90% of what Lisa Lampanelli says it would read as tremendously offensive and homophobic and racists etc.  But she's a gay icon (or nearly so). Read it again but picture her saying it...doesn't come across nearly as bad.  Maybe it just seems offensive because it was said by a 'threatening black man' (Morgan) and not your 'crazy Aunt' (Lampanelli).

Blah, blah, blah.....more forced, insincere pap that we're supposed to suck up and move on and say, "Yes, yes, we forgive you!"  I, for one, do not accept his apology.  My heart goes out to his three sons, and for their sake, I pray that none of them happen to be gay.  I'm taking a stand on this one and letting NBC know that they've lost a viewer.  And as for Chris Rock not wanting to live in a world "where Tracy Morgan cant (sic) say inappropriate shit,"---well, please feel free to leave.
