Woody Allen's Best Movies Ranked In Order

Midnight in Paris has gotten some of the best reviews in ages for master auteur Woody Allen, who keeps on cranking them out, as blissfully neurotic as ever.

And that's a good opportunity for me to look back at Woody's incredibly large ouevre and pick his five best gems, in ascending order of neuro-dazzle.

Special mentions go to Bullets Over Broadway, Alice, Broadway Danny Rose, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and a whole mess of others, from dramas to comedies to tragicomedies and even his musical Everyone Says I Love You. Yes, I liked it!

The five best:

5. Zelig (1983)

Extremely clever pseudo-documentary with expert editing matching Woody's wit and historical glee. The fact that I know someone who pretends to have been part of every event in modern history made it that much more relevant for me.

4. Sleeper (1973)

Chaplinesque romp with Woody as a man frozen asleep for 200 years. The orb and the orgasmatron are two of Woody's most priceless inventions. Lordy, how nightclubs could use them now! Anyway, when this movie is funny, it's gut-busting.

3. Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

A mature masterwork dabbling in New York neuroses, featuring a stellar cast doing their absolute best work (Oscars for Dianne Wiest and Michael Caine). At this point, Woody had stopped imitating the greats and unquestionably became one.

2. Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)

Even darker and deeper, though the drama about betrayal is countered with rip-roaring hilarity for a mix that is very heady and extremely Woody. I find this movie incredibly haunting and memorable.

1. Annie Hall (1974)

I had to go for the obvious because this is the most bittersweet, angsty, groundbreaking, fourth-wall-breaking, and funny love story ever made. Most famous line: "Hey, don't knock masturbation. It's sex with someone I love." Best scene: The lobster cooking. Even if they'd stuck with the original title -- Anhedonia -- this would have been a classic. Maybe.

Given that Woody has made around 45 films and given us about 6-8 wonderful ones (granted, most moviemakers don't give us a single one), a better posting would be: "Woody Allen's Worst Movie's Ranked In Reverse Order."  There are so many stinkers -- "Celebrity, "Small Time Crooks," "Hollywood Ending" -- that it's hard to choose.

I can't tell which of his films are the best, but I like Radio Days, Match Point and Deconstructing Harry.

I'd put Husbands and Wives in there. Heartbreakingly human.

Purple Rose of Cairo is his masterpiece.

1) Take The Money and Run (cause it was the first WA movie I ever saw)

2) Broadway Danny Rose

3) Purple Rose of Cairo

The mark of a great movie is this: when it shows up on TV and you cannot ignore it and you have to watch the whole of it no matter how many times you've seen it. For this reason, I feel that his "Bullets Over Broadway" must be included in that list.

No Husband and Wives? That one beats Hannah and Her Sisters on sheer true-to-life psychological manipulation alone.

Deconstructing Harry was great too.

How can he forget Manhattan? That one should be on the list for the intro alone!

I didn't forget anything. It's just not on my top five.

Guess I would like to see your top 10 then...

'Broadway Danny Rose', 'Radio Day's', 'Manhattan', and 'Annie Hall'.  The four best.

You have to expand this list to 10, 5 will not do. How can you ignore The Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose, Bullets Over Broadway and a forgotten comic masterpiece called Love and Death?

Broadway Danny Rose and Purple Rose of Cairo, along with Hannah, Annie and Crimes are my faves, not in any order.  Though it's tough to go wrong with Woody.  Thanks for reminding us of this, MM.

Mikey, these are all great.  Woody has hardly ever missed.  Love Bullets Over Broadway and I will always adore Radio Days!  It's so sweet and funny with all great actors.  I'm partial to the '30s and '40s music too.

What about "Take the Money and Run"?

Hannah will always be my favorite. Just love it. Bullets Over Broadway is an underrated gem.

The nitpickers you wrote about are obviously out in full force.

Anyway, Sleeper is my number one followed by "Crimes" and "Bullets".

Well, I found it Chaplinesque, so I'm sticking with that. I'm not changing my favorite scene either.

Oh, it's fine that you find it Chaplinesque; just don't discount the very many other cinephiles who agree with me on this one: http://www.google.com/search?q... As for your personal fave scene, it's your personal fave scene and no one can distract from that.  I also like, "I used to be a heroin addict; now I'm a methadone addict," " Joey Nickels," "His wife has diabetes," the Marshal McLuhan scene and the scene with Annie and the 2 goonie guys outside the movie theater. He says "I'm standing here with the cast of The Godfather," when, in fact, he IS standing there with 3 people who appeared in The Godfather, including Diane Keaton.

Yes, I am a fan.

3 exceptions - 1) Annie Hall was 1977, not 1974; 2) My favorite scene was Christopher Walken explaining his driving urges and 3) Sleeper was actually more of an homage to Buster Keaton.  Sigourney Weaver was also Alvy Singer's date when he met up with Annie at the end of the movie.

I love how while Christopher Walken is telling him about his urge to crash the car, Alvy is sitting there with that frozen, when-will-this-end? look and then he says Well, Dwayne, I have to get back to planet earth now.
