Me In Hair!

Categories: Theater

The love-and-peace musical Hair may be back on Broadway, but the only real production was in 1986, when Gabriel Rotello gathered a bunch of downtown zanies at the ironically named club the Saint and put us through the Hair-y paces.

Here I am in a gigantic hat and even bigger shades singing "My Conviction," and I have to say I was not bad at all!!!!

Let the sun shine in and take a look.

I wish I could edit your version of "My Conviction" with Charlotte Rae's into a Megamix!

I,to this day, sing "Frank Mills" at The Monster...it perfectly expressed my homosexual teenage angst/crush at the time.

Musto, you sounded really good and your stage demeanor was very likeable.

Thanks. This was fun to do, and I was also in "Jesus Christ Superstar" at Danceteria, directed by Sally Randall (but that was lipsynch).

Danceteria was a brill concept...truly mixed crowd..."don't like the music on this floor?  Take the elevator up!"  And actually, the famously slow elevator was the most fun...you'd never know who you'd "meet".

Madonna made her debut there in '82, ditto for Rupaul in '84.

You know what's funny - I was singing "Easy to be Hard" in the car thismorning - out of nowhere. It's probably been 15 years since I eventhought of Hair. Weird, huh?

By the way, you have a nice singing voice.

and the woman who sang it in the movie version, got a standing ovation for that song...yes,we applauded a movie! It was powerful...not the "pop" version we were used to.

P.S. - Not just me...the entire theater stood up!

I don't remember if people stood up ( I saw it in the theater when it was released) but no doubt there were chills.

What I do remember was some uptight young woman remarking as everyone was filing out of the theater, "I didn't like it. Those people with all that hair."
