Ricky Gervais Amazed By Emmy Nod For Golden Globes Gig

When awards shows get nominated for awards, it's a little like a dog sniffing its own butt.

And sure enough, the Emmys have nominated the Tonys, the Oscars, and the Golden Globes, all of which will probably end up competing for a Pulitzer!

It's all so creepily incestual it's like a cult in the Bahamas.

But not everyone expected Ricky Gervais to get nominated for an Emmy for his pseudo-controversial Globes hosting job, including Gervais himself.

You'll recall how, in the non-story of the year, people acted upset by Ricky's bitchy performance, in which he made fun of such oft-mocked targets as Scientology and Charlie Sheen.

The Globes people acted irked, too, as if they had no idea what he was going to be reading off the prompter.

Well, clearly more people liked it than didn't -- Ricky was nominated.

When the Globes got an Emmy nod the other day, it turned out to mean he was up for a trophy, too!

"Hilarious," was his initial response.

He tells goldderby.com that he used Globe tactics to get the nomination, taking each Emmy voter to see Cher in concert.

Ricky also claims he wants the non-nominated Mr. Sheen to accept for him because they're both tortured souls.

Now that's controversial.

Go Gervais! You are pure talent, a genius, a hilarious one at that! Love love love, and who cares if you win the award? Nomination speaks for itself... *nasty grin*

I love Ricky Gervais and Charlie Sheen they don't kiss hollyweird business ass and they are funny and witty, hope Charlie will play a guest on Ricky new tv show (Johnny Depp already did it and he is a buddy of Sheen so maybe it is possible..).

The heck with comments about the Golden Globes and Cher (who I love). The best thing here is that hot picture of Ricky Gervais in all of big Bear look and attitude. How incredibly refreshing it is for a magazine cover of a big Bear who is unafraid to show off his non-six pack belly and full chest.

do people honestly consider this guy funny???   he's pathetic

BTW, Cher at 65 is still packing em in and bringing down the house...can't say the same for gervais

Well he's 50 and packing Madison Square Garden with a stand-up act that has much lower overhead than Cher's shows, so he's probably making more $ than her

Um, Gervais is far more popular than Cher these days, his stand-up was the fastest selling in history.

Yeah, his jokes about Cher being old were extremely not funny and kind of sad considering Ricky's not exactly a spring chicken himself. And everyone loves Cher so it's plain dumb to trash her--especially for being a survivor.

Pardon your majesties but since when hasn't Cher been old?

I agree it's nothing to be nomInated over but I do think the dude is funny. I don't dislike like Cher by the way. Loved Mermaids. I just think it's funny when fans get their feathers all ruffled like they are the ones being called old like its a bad thing.

Here I'll give you guys one. Truth be told there was a time when I liked Christina. No. No. Loved Christina. I bought her Spanish and Christmas albums! There was a time when I was all like "...yeah I'm a genie in a bottle baby." But years since I've even had a track of hers in an MP3 player, I thought her part in Borlesque was even more contrived than Cher's. But because the inner gay boy fan in me once adored her so, I can truly appreciate how funny it is that she's so awful in that movie.

There you guys. Diva for Diva. We cool now?

Btw Melinda I dig the profile pic. :)

I think the point was that just saying that someone's old like it's a bad thing or 'is she still alive?' isn't very cutting edge or funny.

Have you seen Borlesque? I fell asleep through her big solo number. When I came to, the BF and I looked at each other, laughed and walked out. Relevance is relative Ick. I mean the only reason I am writing about her right now isn't because I loved listening to that one song she did in the 60's, but because she got mentioned in a funny blog I frequent. I get you are a big fan, but that's show biz dude. You put yourself out there to be revered, a little mockery isn't such a bad sacrifice.

No one said Cher wasn't old. We're saying it's a dumb thing to make fun of someone for. Cher's a survivor. Why should she be mocked for that? She's had more hits in more decades than anyone. To attack her for having stayed alive and relevant is ageist and misogynistic and worst of all, not funny.

He roasts people, but forgets to be funny while he's doing it.

The Emmys would never have a host bitching everyone out, would they? But then they reward him with a nomination for doing it on another awards show? Weird.

I don't like his comments in the link about Cher being old. They're dumb and petty. For this kind of humor, he gets a nomination?
