Shortline Bus Drops The Ball On Dealing With Their Homophobia

Categories: Activism

Remember when singer Ari Gold told us
he was asked to move to the back of the Shortline Bus because he was holding hands with his boyfriend?

And the driver even called over a state trooper, who said nothing wrong was going on and the guy should just keep on driving?

Well, Shortline's George Grieve sent us a bullshit letter saying there would be an investigation into the terrible incident and all would be dealt with.

But nothing was!

Gold reports that he has not gotten an apology, an assurance that the driver was properly disciplined, or some kind of communication stating that this won't happen again.

He hasn't even gotten a refund of his bus tickets!

We will not let this drop, Shortline.

And we will not ride your buses until this is properly dealt with.

No bluff.

please don't let this drop.  I always wish that these sorts of stories had follow-up to them.

Update: I emailed George Grieve, the Shortline guy, to remind him that we weren't going to let this drop. He said that he hasn't let it drop. He said Ari Gold is being represented by Lamda Legal and he's been dealing with them, but the woman to deal with there is now on vacation. So at least Grieve is now addressing this. But I told him that his "investigation" seemed bizarre since when the incident first blew up, he didn't try to get Ari's contact info. Still, at least he's dealing with it now.

When was the last time Shortline ran their demographics?  They've been ferrying queens and dykes up to the Catskills for years on their creaky old buses.  I remember seeing Shortline buses when I was a kid.  Are they even aware of how many LGBT people (used to) ride Shortline up to the Hillbilly Hamptons every week?  This is some Rosa Parks shit.  Back of the bus my ass.  Let's start a shuttle service.  Boycott!

Shortline is low rent, what did you really expect? They pick up drunk people off the side of the road, for Pete's sake.

Let Shortline know directly how you feel about this homophobic bus driver!*call 800-631-8405 (toll free) or 201-529-3666*shortline@coachusa.com*Short Line Bus Company4 Leisure LaneMahwah, NJ 07430

But don't just tell them, show them by boycotting until something is done!

When I initially read Grieve's response--"We will do everything possible blah blah blah"---I figured it was bull, but hoped against hope it wasn't. Shame on you, Mr. Grieve. Do you know what a national boycott feels like? Well, you WILL!!!

We gays should never go near a Shortline Bus ever again except to throw an egg.

I agree. Especially if you are below the Mason - Dixon line. North, probably no problem - like Portland to Boston.  I spent 30 days on one of those  " see America" sales 30 yrs. ago. Major troubles began when the Southern accents got on board. Didn't matter what size, shape, color, religion, sex( or sexual orientation) etc. Seems nothing seems to have changed! Go Sarah, Michelle. Ms Marcus. B, etc.
