The Guard Writer/Director Was Banned From Heath Ledger Set

At the Friars Club luncheon for the Don Cheadle-Brendan Gleeson comedy The Guard the other day, the film's writer-director, John Michael McDonagh, casually mentioned that he wrote the 2003 movie Ned Kelly, but was banished from the set by the director, Gregor Jordan.

Why?

"I don't get on with egotistical, humorless morons," he said, plainly.

"But other than that, you liked him?" I quipped.

"Yeah," McDonagh laughed.

He said Jordan wouldn't take anyone else's (good) ideas because they weren't his. He also contended that the guy would constantly reference his own movies, never mentioning anyone else's.

"Once, he actually said, 'When I made a short film that won an award at Cannes ...' I thought, 'So now we're referencing the short films?'"

McDonagh told me he won't be worried if this war escalates to physical proportions.

"I'm a big guy, so I can hold my own," he said.

"And he wears turleneck jumpers!"

Ouch.

John told me he was banned, then clarified that he was only allowed on set for about an hour idea, which he felt was like crumbs being thrown at him.

Meant "an hour a day".  Anyway, you two guys should work it out.

That's completely untrue. He was never banned in any way from the set. I honestly don't know why John is being like this and saying these things. We got on well during the writing process- there were a few heated moments but no huge falling outs.

Hi, not sure why John is so vitriolic. He was not banned from the set. That is simply not true. And John and I actually worked for quite a long time on the script together. A lot of things on that film were very difficult esp the studio not wanting Heath Ledger to have a beard. It created a whole world of difficulties that caused a lot of budget problems. Not trying to make excuses but there was a lot going on that had nothing to do with John. Not sure why he's so hateful. Gregor Jordan

Assuming you're the person whose name you're using, you could have included something witty in your reply by way of rebuttal. Maybe imply that Heath sought an order of protection on the basis of his opportunings...something.

I like his honesty in standing up to a creepazoid.

PS: McDonagh is the brother of Martin McDonagh, who wrote "In Bruges" and Broadway plays Like "The Pillowman."
