Another Famed Restaurant Is Bye-Bye

Film Center Cafe, on Ninth Avenue at 44th Street, was for a long time a sensible Theater District place for nice meals (the turkey dinner was particularly lavish), strong brunches, and lively ambience.

Well, I just passed by and it's kaput. Another victim of the slippery, unappetizing economy.

The sign outside thanks patrons for their years of support and urges them to go to the other eateries in the chain.

Wah. I like anything with "film" and "cafe" in the name, and will really miss this place, especially since the nearby joint where they scarily wheel Turkish dessert trays at you will probably benefit.

The Owner, Bobby Malta is SCUM who treats his employees like indentured servants. He ruined a wonderful institution.

Jennyhwa1, yes it was badly run. It started with the 1st renovation years ago. It completely changed when all it needed was a lift. Thanks klippning.

Last night just noticed another one down 9th Ave. from this one closed, Rachel's!!  It's now a Mexican joint (looks like a chain place).

Rachel's is owned by the same folks as the recently opened (and popular!) Patron, at 9th at about 52nd.  It's not a chain.

Like so much of New York these days, though pockets of 9th Avenue look like the rich-people-craziness hasn't touched them. I mean, FIND is still right behind the Port Authority Bus Terminal. But in general, the rich are killing US and NYC!

It's always devastating when a comforting oasis closes.

PS; Writer John Koblin jsut alerted me to the fact that someone posted on Facebook that Phoenix bar (in the East Village) is closing, but another know-it-all corrected that it's only being sold.

Changes, changes.

The acoustics were terrible but I could always count on a pretty decent meal.

It was the most reasonably priced place in the neighborhood (outside of fast food). Wah indeed.
