Bert and Ernie Have No Sexual Orientation?

Categories: TV

That's what the Sesame Street producers swore in their response to the petition asking the two male roommates to get married.

Said the officials:

"Bert and Ernie are best friends.

"Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."

There's just one problem with that.

Puppets do have a sexual orientation -- when they're straight, that is.

After all, Miss Piggy is wild for a man, any man, especially Kermit, whom she regularly smothers with kisses in between tantrums.

Count von Count has had a series of countesses -- he's quite a hetero player.

And on and on until it seems these fantasy figures get more action than we do.

But when it comes to the G-word, children's show producers get all terrified into silence, saying sexuality is not an issue and the characters are just made out of cloth and fists.

I've had enough of this BS! And so has Squidward!

This comes from the same place as the idea that the subject of gay people should not be taught in school - the belief that if kids are "exposed" to the subject in a positive manner, they'll"turn gay." And that idea comes from the belief that homosexuality is "caused" by something, or is a choice - as opposed to being innate.

Of course they're gay.  They've both been stuffed at least once.

There are some things best left unsaid - every kid knows he or she came from a mother and a father - let them wrestle it out like we did, don't hand it to them on a silver platter.

Well, then let's let Miss Piggy's lust for males be unsaid too. Or do your practice a double standard?

Yeah but you should probably worry more about the bisexual people pretending to wear puppet suits......

What do some of the thoughts. Ernie and Bert are simply a cult.

Miss Piggy and Kermit married in Muppets Take Manhattan

I thought I read somewhere that Bert and Ernie were originally a parody of The Odd Couple

Bert and Ernie are gay. It would be cool if they got married and the whole world could embrace it. Bert really is Rod. Maybe Ernie is not gay but could find Bert a boyfriend named Ricky? Oh wait, wrong puppets. ;-)

this is right up there with Katy Perry's breasts... I don't think that SESAME STREET knows how to deal with certain things... it's such an insular world... this kindof stuff is like the ragged edge of their reality.

And Oscar's girlfriend was Grungetta. I haven't watched the show in years (it was a happy day when my kids outgrew it - I was more of a Mr Rogers fan). But along with the puppets they also have human characters. Luis and Maria are/were? a hetero couple. It would be realistic to have human gay characters or a gay couple on the show, giving kids a more realistic model of life as it is. But I'm pretty sure they're too gutless to do it. Conservative wrath would rain down and there'd be a boycott of Elmo dolls - merchandising is what Sesame Street is really all about.

Grungetta? Oscar has a black girlfriend?

You make a good point.

Let's compromise and say they're best friends but they fuck too. They're fuck buddies.

It's Tinky Winky all over again. They gave the same argument: "Children's characters have no sexuality." And as you pointed out, Mickey Mouse had a girlfriend and on and on....
