Alec Mapa Scores At The Laurie Beechman Theatre
The petite and powerful bundle of Filipino-American sass (familiar from Ugly Betty) was all wired with energy and humor at his gig Friday night.
He never flagged or disappointed, careening through topics like anal beads, rimming, and Annie without ever losing his kooky command of the stage.
Memorably, Mapa remarked that thanks to gay marriage in New York, there will someday be gay grandpas.
Quipped the comic:
"They'll say, 'I met your grandfather on Grindr. He was 100 feet away. He was charming and intelligent. And then he fucked me.'"
Mapa himself is married to a white guy, with whom he has an African-American son.
When people ask where the boy, Zion, is from, he reminds them that you can get black kids right here in America -- for free!
Mapa riffed a lot on the joys and challenges of being a father and managed to be both touching and funny, especially when he remembered throwing a disciplinary fit at the kid, to which the pint-sized one rejoindered, "And the Oscar goes to ..."
Mapa deserves it.
His next show should be titled Mapa the Human Heart.
