Eddie Murphy As Oscar Host: Waaa!

I'm not thrilled about Eddie Murphy being chosen to host the next Oscars.

First the good news:

After the last telecast with poor, defeated Anne Hathaway and James Franco totally at sea, they're smart to go back to a comedian, someone with a stand-up background and some hilarious instincts.

But did it have to be this comedian?

Don't Eddie's homophobic jokes back in the darker days of the LGBT community still resonate in the memory as even more hideous than Meet Dave?

And when he lost the Oscar for 2006's Dreamgirls, wasn't he ungracious about the whole process to the point of being a rather grumpy loser?

And isn't Eddie on a bit of a career slide that started with the multiple-Razzie-winning Norbit? Why nab him now? (Oh, I guess because it's hard to get someone on top to take such a risk these days.)

And wouldn't he be a whole lot funnier if he could laugh about his own driving-the-transsexual-home incident rather than continue to sweep it under the shag carpet?

Oh, well. At least it won't be boring.

I will never watch, read or in any way participate in anything that involves Eddie Murphy.  I am one faggot that does not draw down a bead on his little black ass.  Vile piece of scum.

The gay community were an open target for comedians back in the 80s.  However, Eddie's schtick was very anti-gay.  I guess it's true that when there are guys who are so loud in their dislike for gay people, they really do have something to hide.

Are you sure you want to say it won't be boring?  Brett Ratner, the producer of the Awards this year, is completing his latest film with Eddie.  So, it looks like it'll be one big advertisement for that.  Nothing like the purest of motives for decision-making.

Having never seen him on SNL, I remember looking forward to a laugh riot when I tuned into his HBO special way back when -don't think I was ever more disappointed in my life - forget the homophobic stuff (what was that stuff with Kramden and Norton???).  It just wasn't funny - maybe cracked a smile once or twice. To get better with age, I would think you'd have to actually start with SOMETHING.

Southern Dave

He's also a third-rate, aging has-been "whose charm escapes me," to quote the press agent about Norman Maine in "A Star is Born."

And the older Murphy gets, the meaner and stranger he looks. Watch him try and even some scores when he's out on that stage, with no one to reign him in. Be Afraid, Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

Be very afraid.

Chris Rock would be edgy and FUN. People actually LIKE him.

Funny...any time you mention black people or the word black I get a bit nervous...but this time you've made a good point. I guess maybe you deserve a second chance too.

How about all those Michael Jackson jokes?

I just sent an e-mail (not anonymous) to the academy at oscars.org, telling them that my friends, family and I will not be watching this year because of their choice of homophobic host. Why don't you?

Other thoughts: since when has it been possible to buy the show to market one film, Oscar director Brett Ratner's opus with Ms. Murphy?  And please tell me that Bruce Vilanch and Carrie Fisher aren't going to write one-liners for this limp-careered douche.

he is a rapid homophobe and that the Oscars has asked this piece of crap to host is an insult not only to gays and lesbians but also to the memory of all the people who died of AIDS.

Really? Are we still on the hate wagon for those jokes almost 30 years ago? He's apologized many times since, basically saying he was a stupid kid with a big mouth at the time. I mean, he was in Dreamgirls, even seeing it on broadway when it came out. How anti-gay can he really be? I say it's about time. You're right Michael, at least it won't be boring. The demographic is going to be huge, making it an actual event again.

Didn't the trannie in question fall to some mysterious death or something?

Yes, she fell out of her kitchen window just months after the Murphy incident.

"Oh, well. At least it won't be boring."

Uhhh, Musto, since when was the Oscars telecast NOT boring?

No one ever heeds my advice to skip the actual show and instead watch it--beautifully edited down to 22 minutes (plus commercials)--on "Entertainment Tonight" the following evening. Hell, ET even manages to slip in some great footage from some of the Governor's Ball and other after parties.

were the producers afraid of hiring Kathy Griffin and having all of the celebs running to the exit doors?

What about deeply inoffensive and straight-pandering Ellen de Generes? She could even fawn over Scientologist Tom Cruise for half the broadcast!

I was thinking of some great celebrities  that would be sensational to host the Oscars but I realized ..they'reall dead.

I've despised Eddie Murphy since seeing his homophobic rant in "Raw," which I think was just about the most hateful thing I ever saw in my life. Making him voice the jackass in "Shrek" was perfect casting as far as I'm concerned. If he's hosting, our household won't be watching.

The should have got Neil Patrick Harris. He did fantastic on the Tonys.

I read on Gawker that the director of the Academy Awards in 2012 just happens to also be the director of a new Eddie Murphy movie coming out soon. So the whole thing is a giant publicity stunt for him and the movie. The whole thing stinks.

If you wanna see how quickly Hollywood sprang into action to protect Murphy (who had a children's movie coming out), stick Eddie Murphy and Paul Baressi's name into the Internet to find an article about how Baressi went around to all of Murphy's trannies (who were all willing to talk on the record after the tabloid story broke) and paid them off.  Murphy was well known in that milieu.  I wouldn't have cared, except for his continuous (self) hateful remarks about gay men.  Because of the inordinate dependence upon religious institutions and the hatred that flows from same, few if any black actors (and non-actors) will ever come out but will go to great lengths to protect their down-low activities.  However, when the veil falls, as it inevitably does, black men always make the best trannies.  Just take a look at "Paris is Burning."

Isn't Barresi also the famous porn director/producer?  Who kept his films mostly segregated in terms of color until he filmed that Civil War reated porn film?

Should read: "Civil War-related porn film".

fyi: Paul Barresi is J. Travolta's on-again-off-again lover and played a small part in that workout movie he did w/ Jamie Lee Curtis

Yeah, I was actually a member of the gym from the movie (old Beverly Hills Health Club on Santa Monica in WeHo) where they met in the shower.

Eddie Murphy is definitely in the enemy camp of gay people.  His pat, insincere "apologies" for his "words of a misinformed 21-year old" (quoting a 1996 press release of his) have the ring of something he was forced to say for career reasons, rather than for any real regret he might have for kicking the gay community when they were at their very lowest.  And in response to the commenter above, asking whether he gets a second chance:  Not with me he doesn't.  "Deliberate cruelty is not forgivable".  I sincerely hope he bombs and/or gets caught going down on a Hollywood Boulevard trannie...again.

EDDIE MURPHY IS THE BEST!  (the oscars are bullshit, anyway!) eddie murphy may have HAD, in the PAST, made homophobic remarks; but let´s address the (gay) african-american phobia within the (white) gay community STILL present today!

the stuff he said about italians and rocky was funny, too!

and oh! we´re going to go on and on and on about the tranny incident like a broken record. so, i can see why jane fonda will always be known as hanoi jane (to some people)!

"eddie murphy may have HAD, in the PAST, made homophobic remarks; "

"may have" ?  In fact, he did. On the very RAW album that put him on the map. Why would you call this into question?

"in the PAST"

Not sure if you realize this, but every thing you ever read or hear was said in the past. That includes someone talking to you directly.

The most he or we can hope for is a lower case wardrobe malfunction.

He apologized for the remarks but you're right, Musto, it lingers in the mind, especially since he apparently has a taste for trannies.

It was an ignorant time & homphobia was considered "cool".....doesn't anyone believe in second chances?.....who knows maybe he'll finally come out during the telecast!! wouldn't that be worth the price of entrance?!!

Lost Weekend
Lost Weekend

Homophobia was never considered "cool."  When Murphy's live-concert album appeared (with the song "Party On" or whatever the piece of wasted vinyl is called), there was a segment where Murphy asks the crowds, "Are there any fags in here?"  (Silence from the audience, obviosly.)  "Good!  Let's talk about them!"  I have boycotted every movie, album, Saturday Night Live, even Dreamgirls I passed up.  The man sucks; the Academy has hit a new low == next year, Best Picture with White People (5 nominees), and Best Picture with Black People (2 nominees).

Homophobia was considered cool?  Not that I recall.  Always liked other social ugliness, racism, etc.  Not cool.

I remember watching his stand up special on HBO in the 80's with my first boyfriend.  I was newly out of the closet and had never heard such vile things said about gay people.  We both were disgusted and shut it off and I've never liked him since.

"...I was newly out of the closet and had never heard such vile things said about gay people."

If that's the case, then Mr. Murphy probably did you a huge, albeit unintended, favor.

I had, of course, been called a fag by then.  But what I think bothered me the most and had the biggest impression on me was him telling these horrible jokes and the whole audience laughing hysterically at them.  It made a huge impact on my young, gay mind.

Weren't they talking about Billy Crystal coming back because people were so happy to see him at the last Oscars? I guess he's considered even more washed up than Eddie M.

Last year the academy said they wanted to appeal to a younger audience so they got younger hosts.  So this year what does Eddie represent?  Can't answer that one.  Don Cheadle would be a great host.  Or Giancarlo  Esposito, or Samuel L Jackson, etc, etc.  I not waiting with baited breath for this one.

If he comes out in his drag character from Norbit, it'll be even worse than Franco in drag.
