At last night's screening of the Time/HBO documentary Beyond 9/11: Portraits of Resilience, I chatted with James Toback, who wrote Bugsy and the upcoming Gotti flick and wrote/directed works like Black and White and Harvard Man.

So where was he on 9/11?

"I was watching it on television," Toback related, "and saying out loud to myself, 'Didn't I say that this was going to happen?'

"The most ludicrous thing was Condi Rice saying, 'Who would have thought that an airplane would intentionally fly into a building as a weapon?'

"On her desk were threats that this was going to happen!

"I always thought some weird, nutty guy would try something.

"It's like knocking a penis down. It's some kind of arrogant image."

Wait, there's more.

Actress/photographer Berry Berenson -- Anthony Perkins's widow -- had just given Toback permission on the phone to use a clip of Perkins in The Trial for a film.

She told Toback, "If I come to New York, we can have lunch tomorrow -- or I might go from Boston to L.A."

She chose the latter path.

Horrific.

Interesting.  Just finished the Beatty bio and Toback was quite something.  Producer David Begelman once made Toback angry.  Toback pulled Begelman down to the floor by his ear and made him bark like a dog and oink like a pig in his own office.  Afterwards, Begelman got off the floor and pulled a pistol out of his desk drawer.  Toback figured his life was over.  But Begelman said "Don't think you scared me.  Every day I put a bullet in this pistol and put it to my head.  Sometimes I pull the trigger and sometimes I don't.  Don't think I'm afraid to die."  (Begelman blew his brains out a few years later.)   He told Warren Beatty about his humiliation of Begelman and Beatty made him put it in Bugsy.  Interestingly, the real Bugsy had done the same thing to a former associate of his, marching him on his knees around a hotel swimming pool in the same manner.

I'm still amazed that they were able to ID the terrorists so quickly. Almost as quickly as they pulled Lee Harvey Oswald.

For anyone who thinks we were caught unaware on 9/11 - @ 1:52 PM( I happened to I look at my watch) on 9/9/ 2011 I was walking on the bike/jogging path along West Street between Houston/Canal Sts. and noticed what I thought were 2 helicopters flying past the Empire State building. They turned out to be 2 fighter jets flying in tight formation and as they turned left I saw them fly down to about 20 feet over the Hudson. I stared as they came closer into view, watched as they flew past me and then saw both jets raise their altitude as they approached the WTC to about the middle of the towers height, make a sharp left and fly east.Never ever saw fighter jets fly over Manhattan before and never saw them after.  There is no way I was the only person who witnessed this.

I believe, but am not sure, that this was a NORAD training mission involving the possibility of a hijacked UK to NYC airplane being blown up over NYC.
