What Was John Wayne Really Like?

At a reception and preview for Heritage Auctions' The Personal Property of John Wayne the other night, the Duke's son Ethan Wayne said life with Dad was "adventurous, bold, kind, and loving."

And when the superstar wanted to read you the riot act, he was nice enough not to do it to your face.

"If you got a letter from him," said another son, Patrick, "you'd open it very slowly.

"It was usually that he had something to say he couldn't say over the phone, and it wasn't funny."

Yeah, but at least you could eventually auction it off, lol.

Privately, I asked Ethan if there were any of his dad's films that he prayed weren't remade because the originals are so sacred.

He said he doesn't mind remakes at all, and he felt the new True Grit was actually very well done.

"But I bet they never remake The Conqueror," I quipped, referring to the ill-fated 1956 costumer with John Wayne as Genghis Khan.

"Well, they did Thor," he replied, smiling.

To those of us over fifty, Duke is an icon - charming the crowd of Harvard students in the sixties was the clincher.

this is certainly a piece of fluff that says nothing.

At one time he thought Frank Zappa had given him a blow job. Or maybe that's how he greeted everybody?

What was John Wayne really like? I suppose that all depends on who you ask. I am sure Michelle Bachman has an interesting answer.

Duke was a decent person, except for his politics.

I remember reading a while back that the Duke had a bad case of halitosis.

Then you're an idiot. John Wayne wrote letters to his own sons telling them harsh things. You don't find that interesting? The ultimate he-man of the silver screen couldn't bear to say harsh things to his kids' faces! What's more, his own son doesn't mind all of Wayne's classics being remade. He liked True Grit. He even made a joke about dad's worst film, The Conqueror, and compared it to Thor. Sorry it's not Watergate, but we found it insightful.

As if frank Zappa could even open his mouth.

As I'm sure Hitler was, as well. :-)

No, actually I read it was a guy named Troofire who had halitosis.  How's that rumor-mongering feel now?

Plus...he portrayed military gung-ho heroes, giving the impression that he had been a GI Joe. I'll never forget how disappointed my grandpa was when he found out the truth. Wonder why our hero JW was never in the military? He may have allegedly not wanted to confront his kids and used the mail instead; however, he did use a belt on them as discipline.

And before you get all starstruck again, here's some info for you:Once, interviewed about civil rights, he said: "I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to the point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people."

Worst of all, he was a right-wing Republicant.

I'm just the messenger, Jimmy.  Why are you so hostile?

Looks like Obama proved him right.

C'mon guys. This is a Musto blog. You're supposed to be speculating on the Duke's alleged and closeted homosexuality.

Yeah, Troofire is pretty thin-skinned for such a piece of shit.

Troofire saying "Why are you so hostile?" is like Sarah Palin saying "Why are you so dumb?"
