Eddie Murphy Finally Talks To The Press

Ever since Eddie Murphy's 1997 Good Samaritan incident when he was caught generously driving a transsexual hooker home, Eddie has been reticent to talk to the print media.

I guess he doesn't like to brag!

But Eddie just did a press conference for his new movie Tower Heist, no doubt assuming:

(a) The incident might be finally be sort of semi-forgotten by now.

(b) No one would have the ovaries to bring it up at a press conference, especially when (I hear) the assembled press had been advised to "keep positive."

Besides, Eddie is the next Oscars host, as you know, and he's going to have to talk to press people to engender good will, especially since the last Oscars was not quite award-caliber, not to mention the fact that the last time Eddie was at the Oscars, he ungraciously walked out moments after he lost.

"This time, I'll stay!" crows Eddie.

And this time he'll drive ... his wife. If he can get one by February.

I still say that Eddie Murphy should have been nominated and won an Oscar for The Nutty Professor.  Comedy is hard, and he was brilliant.  The fact that he was not even nominated soured me on the Oscars.  I thought the least they could do was give him a supporting Oscar for Dreamgirls, because he was terrific in that.  Let me add that I'm a white guy in his late 60s, and a real movie fan.

Unless he's apologizing for his last, say 10, movies - I'm not interested.

Clips from his new movie look funny and I've seen him making nice-nice and joking around with his co-stars  ...

But am I the only one who thinks there's something basically -- hmmmmm -- unpleasant about him these days?

Clearly, the movie and Oscar-hosting job are a major makeover move to see if there's still some money to be squeezed out of him yet.

it's over. If Billy Crystal is some kind of better choice I can't imagine who is watching anyway.

PS: Sure enough, the incident wasn't mentioned at the press conference. Naturally.

Can he be funny again? Can we forgive him everything? I'd rather have seen Billy Crystal host. He doesn't need to stir up good will. He just gets it.
